I currently keep my content on a Synology NAS. This NAS is not powerful enough to run the Plex Server locally.
I have i7-6700K w/1070 Ti PC Running my Server while it connects to my NAS over SMB for the content. This setup works great for me. No Streaming issue locally or remotely.
I was looking into switching my Server over to my NVIDIA Shield TV to cut down on power usage and let my PC sleep more often(at all). By switching my server to the Shield are there any benefits I will be losing over my current setup?
Will use Mobile Sync if we are going on Vacation.
Apple TV Client & Shield Client mostly, iOS Remotley
2 Users never more then 3 simultaneous streams
Blu-ray rip for movies
1080p & 720p for TV shows
I recommend you to test operation with the Shield server for a longer period.
(There is no limit for the number of servers in your account. So keep your existing server as it is.)
I think the number of items will be a bit much for the Shield.
But maybe someone more experienced with the Shield server may contribute a first-hand experience.
Well that was my plan… I was just trying to remember what causes limitation on Plex, and if that has changed, like the number of cores your CPU had was how many streams you could have at once and my synology can’t do hardware encoding because it wasn’t an x86 CPU if anything like that.
Just wanted to give an update, that I haven’t noticed any difference from Plex Media Server on PC to Shield TV, so looks like I’m gonna stay with it for now and let my PCs Sleep a little more often.
I have two shields and they are pretty bad for PMS. I have much more content than you though. Eventually the device won’t be able to keep track of your recently added stuff and it will constantly randomize the order. All of this started happening after the last shield update.
I did a factory reset on both and it fixed them but the issue started the creep up again with TV shows just a few minutes ago.
