Setting up Plex on two synchronized Synology Servers

Server Version#: DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 3
Player Version#: Version 4.51.1

I have searched the forum, google and the support site and haven’t found my exact situation.

Here is my setup:

Location 1 (Same network)

Server 1 - Synology DS920+ (DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 3) IP = 192.068.0.10

Server 2 - Synology DS720+ (DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 3) IP = 192.168.0.98

Both Servers are on the same network at this time but will eventually be set up at different locations.
Server 2 is set up with Synology Drive ShareSync and is synchronizing all data from Server 1, to include the Plex Folder.
Server 2 will be an offsite (Location 2) backup of Server 1, while also providing users at Location 2 access to all data. Server 2 will connect over a VPN to continue to synchronize with Server 1. I would like to have a Plex Server running at Location 2 so that users of Plex at Location 2 will not be streaming data from Location 1.

I have Plex (Version 4.51.1) set up on Server 1 at this time and everything is working fine.
I would like to set up Plex on Server 2 and have the option for Plex users to select the server that is at their location when they are using Plex.

I have read the articles about cloning your Plex server, but I am not sure if this will have my desired outcome. I already have all the data being synchronized between the two servers. So no need to do a backup/restore, etc.

Can I just install Plex on Server 2? What other steps are needed in this scenario?

Thank you,

Nick

Each Synology server will be running their own local instances.

If you don’t make either available remotely, clients on either side should only detect their locally running instance and can share a single login.

If you do want to expose remote access, you can setup different client logins for each location and only “share” the local library to each of those location-specific logins.

First, 4.51.1 is the Web Player not the server version. You are probably meaning 1.21.2 as shown in Settings - Server - General . (not Settings - [Web] - General )

To make answering your question easier, may I rephrase and ask you to correct anything I’ve misunderstood?

  1. Server 1 (Primary) will be used by the users
  2. Server 2 (Backup) is offsite
  3. Both machines have access to the same media.

So far, this is easy.

  1. Both servers are stand alone
  2. Both are managed under a single account
  3. You provide access to the specific library sections on either or both machines as you so desire.
  4. The Plex apps allow users to pin whichever shared library sections (or whole servers) they wish to their apps (for easy access).

Is it true you wish to sync the servers themselves while live ? This wasn’t clear.

Regrading Cloning:

  1. If both users are used as stand-alone in any form, when cloned any playback history on the target will be lost.

  2. If cloning, both PMS servers must be in the shutdown state. (database not active).

  3. Blind copying of the data will not work because the ID number information, which keeps the two servers unique, is stored in Plex in the “Preferences.xml” file. If you overwrite the backup with the primary’s then both become identical – making maintenance and differentiation during use a nightmare / essentially impossible.

DSM 7 will introduce a whole new ‘bag of hurt’.

Before discussing DSM 7, have I captured the twin-parallel server concept you wish you achieve ? I think I’m missing a few points.

Well I installed Plex on server 2 and achieved what I was trying to achieve. When a user logs into Plex they can choose which server they want to access. Since I am not synchronizing the Plex shared folder, the integrity of each Plex server will remain intact.

Thank you everyone for replying.
