Setting up Plex with AT&T Uverse

Any way of changing settings so the firewall can stay on a still have remote access

Directions actually worked like a charm. Just jumped in to say that. Just got AT&T Uverse and was losing my mind figuring out these router settings. I had the 5268AC Box

I, too, have a 5268AC Box; HOWEVER, I have a Router Behind Router configuration utilizing a Linksys AC Dual Band Router. The Linksys connects to all of our computers, and to the Firestick at the 65" TV, the Blu-Ray at the 65" TV, and a Blu-Ray in my bedroom. Since getting the 5268, (replaced a 589), Plex no longer functions ANYWHERE in the house. I get stuttering and spinning wheels on all computers; and, Plex on Firestick just plain fails…

I’ve tried setting these Firewall fixes, still no joy. Any additional help would GREATLY be appreciated.

Also, I would like to add that on the prior Gateway, (the 589), Plex on the computers ONLY worked if I set Plex to connect ā€œUnsecuredā€ to the Server. Plex on Firestick worked perfectly on the 589 Gateway.

So, there’s something radically different between the 589 and the 5268AC. I just can’t figure out what.

I’ve made SOME progress… I found the entry position to input 192.168.1.254 into the ā€œChooseā€ position and got the hole poked into the Gateway. NOW, all the computers allow Plex to function normally; BUT, I still can’t get the Firestick to work with Plex anymore… I keep getting an Error Msg. stating that the Server MUST be restarted, and then restart the App…

Old thread, but i just moved past the reach of Time Warner and was forced to settle with Uverse (6mbps). Thanks for the prior posters for solving this. Now if I can ever find a break in home renovations to play with Plex…

Another thank you to the op’s for helping me get Plex working again after transitioning over to Uverse. Steps worked perfectly except for one step that I missed (which should have been a no brainer). I had to restart my mac after setting up the port forwarding (would have saved me an hour of messing around).

All the way in May and I still need help with this very thing. I’m very ADHD and networking tech illiterate (I specialized in hardware, not software or networking)

Can anyone confirm that this indeed does work for running a router behind the AT&T provided gateway router? What would be the best way to go about getting this to work? Would I be able to disable the WiFi on the AT&T router and set up my Netgear in access point mode? Where would I plug the Plex Server computer into? The AT&T gateway or into one of the ethernet ports on the Netgear router? Thanks in advance.

After many of hours of research and trial and error, I was able to fix the Remote Access issue.

I followed this Youtube video to open 32400 ports for both TCP and UDP for Plex Media Player.
NOTE: THIS GUY IS OPENING THE PORT FOR MINECRAFT, BUT IT IS THE SAME STEPS FOR PLEX.

After you open the ports for Plex for TCP and UDP, and you still cannot access Plex remotely, then you might need to go under the Gateway settings. My gateway model is 5268AC.

Log in to your gateway GUI via your browser by typing in 192.168.1.254.
Click on Customize Firewall
Click on LAN
Click on IPv6
Disable IPV6 / Uncheck the box!
Click on SAVE.

If you still do not have Remote Access to Plex. Then you will need to go under the Plex Settings.

Click on Server
Click on Show Advanced
Check the box for Manually Specify public port
Click on Apply

WAIT FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES. My remote access turned green after a couple of minutes. I guess there is a delay from the gateway to your server / PC to communicate and actually work.

I hope this works for whomever else needs help. I was able to do this since I remember I had to disable IPv6 before within my Linksys EA9500 router in order to enable remote access for Plex. This was when I was using XFinity as my ISP. However, I switched to UVerse now.

Not sure if it really did the trick or just waiting for a bit. Turning off IPV6 in the router settings finally made the check box green and stay for remote access…

I know this thread is old, but it’s still relevant. If you have the (BGW210) follow this link, or follow the steps below.

Steps

  1. Go to Services
  2. Login with your device access code (on the side of your modem)
  1. For Service Name, enter Plex Media Server (TCP)
  2. For Global Port Range, enter 32400 and 32400
  3. For Base Host Port, enter 32400
  4. For Protocol, enter TCP
  5. Press Add
  • Repeat steps 3 - 7, with UDP as the protocol
  1. Return to NAT/Gaming
  2. For Service, select Plex Media Server (TCP)
  3. For Needed by Device, select the appropriate device
  4. Select Add
  5. Repeat steps 9 - 11, with Plex Media Server (UDP) as the service

That seems to have FINALLY done it for me, after an hour on-and-off of toying. Whew.

Many thanks to everyone in this thread. Hopefully that didn’t bork anything else up.

Also worked for me. Fellow AT&T Fiber customers, it sounds like they pushed an update that forced IPv6 by default, sometime in August 2018. Disable for remote access!

I had to manually roll back AT&T’s broken firmware update to get my port forwarding working again:

For me, on an Arris BGW210-700

The problem was the in NAT/Gamming Service I configured… I specified a ā€œbase portā€ instead of a ā€œport rangeā€ 32400-32400. So I created 2 services, 1 udp, 1 tcp on those ranges… assigned both to my device and voila!

This worked for me as well. I have my QNAP NAS attached to a router behind the Uverse modem. In the Uverse settings I set up the applications for the router (it allowed me to pick the router rather than have to pick an IP address). This allows that port to be open for all of the router and worked fine.
