Setup required to DIRECT play TRUE HD atmos or atleast DD+

Hi!,

I have went through a ton of articles in the past week but I just wanted to post in here and hopefully get a clear and concise help/tips. I have a denon x1600h avr and an LG c1 (2021). I watch my movies using PLEX and they are usually 1:1 blu ray copies with all the sound formats. My system is a 5.1.2 surround setup. I would like to know exactly what setup I need to do to DIRECT PLAY the audio (true HD atmos) and video of course. I understand that I need a shield and the shield should go to receiver which goes to TV. My receiver is atleast 25ft + distance from TV and in wall cabling so do I need an HDMI 2.0? Or an HDMI 2.1? Or a fiber optic run. My TV and receiver both have EARC/ARC ports, although reciever does not do 2.1 which is not huge concern for me right now. Please get back to me as I have been in this dilemma for past week. I was told I can do a fiber optic run to future proof etc but I would like to here concrete thoughts. It seems that HT users online know more than the actual stores. Thanks!

The setup you basically described sounds correct. Shield>Receiver>TV. If you are playing 4K rips, I would go with the Shield Pro. No need for fiber-optics. 25-30ft HDMI 2.1 cables are readily available. Since you are running the shield directly to your receiver you do not need to be concerned about ARC/eARC, at least for programing from the shield. If you are watching from your TVs tuner or a built in TV app then ARC applies. Otherwise it’s just setting your options on your shield and receiver correctly and everything should be good.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me. Sounds about right, got the shield pro and will also hopefully just hook it up to my router for faster speed. I’m ranging from 25ft to possibly 50, waiting on my AV guy to come but I found these cables by RUIPRO that people have been saying work well for 40ft plus hdmi 2.1 etc. My plan is to setup everything up without any wall mounting and watch a few movies w 2-3 hdmi cable brands to test for steady true hd atmos with no drops etc.
