"Share Movie" Link for People without MyPlex Accounts with optional expiration date

I have been a “lifer” since day one. I share music with friends who are also plex users. it would be great to send a live link and hit somebody with some new music that makes their day…

c’mon guys… you can do it… make it so…

thanks for all you do!

Bump this to the top. Come on Plex let’s make this a feature like pogo plug and Lima so easily offered before their extinction.

I cannot stress enough how useful a feature this would be.
Some of my friends are skeptical of Plex and, if I can give them a direct link to something I have on my Plex server and let them watch it (without having to sign up for an account), I’m sure they’d love it!

This would be extremely useful to share things with other plex users and to get new user hooked into plex

Yes please, would love this feature!

After reading this article, I always thought it was a very good function! But I’d like to ask the development team why they don’t listen to customers’opinions about the huge demand for this feature among users around the world, a topic from 2013 to 2019. But always keep the official practice?

come on - this feature is the only thing missing why I don’t buy Plex Pass yet

How would you go about setting up this ‘Featured Movie’ section? It seems like something I would like to try…

You could do it even better by just sharing a library to your friends and restricting access to one/a limited amount of movies with this method: (share labels)

I would still want links that I could make expire and there would be no account needed, but this is good enough for now.

so… like, 111 votes. Multiple requests on the forums. Many, many people requesting it. Is there some point where these votes are even taken seriously? It seems like a feature request can just sit there with no ability to comment or vote. Does Plex just choose what to do, regardless of user request?

This one has been up for years. You can share entire Libraries with other people. I couldn’t possibly imagine it would be way too difficult to implement temporary shared links. It might be… I don’t know what the code looks like, but it is clearly something that the community wants.

It’s just quite weird to not have this feature and to give no reason why. I could put 1 video in a library by itself and share that library with whoever I want and then they could click on that shared library and view the individual video. However… If I want to share a video individually, I cannot.

It just seems like the programming is already there. I don’t need a public link where people can view things without a Plex account. I just want to share a video with someone that has a Plex account, that allows them to just stream it without having to go find the library.

Link to email would be nice. Or, even, sharing a file with a person which sends it into their own “Shared files” directory and they can remove those shared files from their Plex app as they see fit.

I came here from google when searching for this feature in Plex.
But now, as I think about it more, there might be legal issues about it.
Imagine if someone posts a link to illegal content on some public forum. And it gets viral, and a lot of people watch video, or listen to a song, all without distribution license or copy rights.
And the link points to Plex. It could mean a legal suite and fines and who knows what.
I know, that for some cases, sharing a link to your own movie/song with friends is just fine, but this feature opens gates for all kind of troubles.

Yeah, it is probably safe to file this under ‘not gonna happen’ and refund votes.

Plex already tackled the DVR Guide issue, and that was a huge issue to deal with. I believe they could implement this without creating such an issue. Maybe the link is for people who you already have in your friends list and it just pops up in their Plex and asks if they want to watch it. Oh, maybe the links have a max expiration date of like 7 days. That wouldn’t do much good on a public forum after those 7 days are up, and if you wanted to create something that lasted longer than 7 days, you create a library and share it.

I believe your concern is sound. People shouldn’t share illegal content so publicly. I am absolutely sure that this is a good concern for Plex to have. I just believe that this could be implemented in a way that is a more temporary share of one file, rather than a permanent share of an entire library. I also believe that it isn’t nice to ignore your users like Plex tends to do.
