I am a PlexPass user and have a Plex library of movies and music and now I would like to share individual movies with a friend. This friend only has the basic account without the PlexPass.
Unfortunately that doesn’t work. If I share my entire library, my library is shown on my friend’s Plex account. But if I share individual films or playlists, it will not be displayed at all on my friend’s account.
But I don’t want to share my entire media library, preferring only certain playlists.
Is it even possible to share individual films / playlists with a friend?
I would be happy to receive answers.
You should be able to share individual items with a users added as a friend.
It appears not all clients are displaying the Shared section where such single-item shares will be displayed (see the linked support article).
Will the shared section show on other clients (e.g. using Plex Web)? Just trying to figure out if this is a hiccup with the iOS client or a general issue.
If it’s showing alright in the browser, force-quitting and restarting the app on iOS might do the trick.
I have already tested this several times and the “Shared” section is not displayed in the web client either.
As I said, when I share my entire media library, all the features work such as “Watch together”. But if I don’t share my entire media library, I won’t be able to share individual films either.
By the way, this has been the case with all friends so far, I’ve set up a test account myself to see whether it works there. But unfortunately there is no „Shared" section to be seen and sharing a single film is not possible.
Is there something in the settings of my Plex account that I have to set, a requirement for sharing content?
How exactly are you trying to share with those friends?
You’ll need to add them as Friends to your Plex accounts – even if you won’t share any libraries with them. Once they’re listed as friends, you should be able to pick them when sharing a single item from that item’s context menu.
If you share with them by entering their e-mail address, they will first have to accept that request (which will also add them as friends).
That’s exactly how I did it. I added him as a friend in my account, he received an invitation, accepted it. Since then he’s been on my Plex account as a friend. Then I’ll share a movie with him.
My account shows that I shared this movie with him – when I look in the settings for Account > User & Sharing > Shared Media
I’m on his friends list too.
If he clicks on my account in his friends list there, this shared film is also displayed there (Account > User & Sharing > Shared Media). But it can’t be clicked or played, it seems like something is locked there.
And that’s why the shared movie won’t appear in the sidebar.
