Sharing libraries (or single items) with multiple users

Currently, the only way to share a library is to edit users one at a time and select which libraries that user is able to see. But it seems like there are a lot of Plex users that have a large number of users, and I thought an alternative method of sharing would be helpful.

Proposed: As an alternative to the existing method, the Admin should also be able to edit a Library and select from a list of users whom the Library is shared with. The UI could be similar to the existing UI for sharing - a checkbox for “All Users” which, when unchecked, reveals a list of Users to choose from.

Edit Library to share to multiple users:

This was discussed once before, but was never made into a feature request, as far as I can tell.

Update: The “Grant Access…” dialog is a great step forward. All that remains is to make the list of users multi-select. This can apply wherever “Grant Access…” is available, so entire libraries, or individual albums/movies/playlists.

This would dovetail nicely into integrating a better user lists UI. Filtering by library shared, etc.

I like this idea. Select the library and add or delete users that share it, instead of going through the 150 users one by one to add or delete them from a library.

That’s it, but to be clear, I think this should be in addition to the existing method, not instead of. The current method is more efficient for servers with few users and many libraries.

Agreed, and I didn’t mean to imply replacing the existing…

+1 and liked

It would be nice to group users too. Create custom groups and then add users to them then you could share to either groups and/or individual users.

Would love this feature, the current way is backwards in my opinion. I have 3 users and honestly it’s annoying enabling their access by user when I update the library or change some things, certainly couldn’t imagine having to do this with more!

Taking that logic a bit further, you could have remote access groups and local access groups and both types of groups…

If we get User Bandwidth limits like I HOPE we do, where the limits are placed on each user instead of on the server itself, this could be one way to set bandwidth or transcoding limits for a large group of people. Set it at the group level and everyone in that group inherits the limits set. The same could be done with sync, or delete or other features, too. (Although I don’t want any of my users deleting my media. I just listed it as an example of what could be set at a group level…)

If we get this ability, then setting a default OM profile for each user at a group level just got drastically simplified. (I want group “friends” to use only a 3Mbps OM version, but group “Family” can use whatever media exists, for example.) This setting could over-ride the settings for the individual or the group, if they are set to 8Mbps, unless there were no OM versions of the media ready to go…

While this groups isn’t part of this original request it sure sounds like a good idea to me! Someone should make that an official request. (Hint, hint?)

+1 agreed!

There are a couple of feature requests for this, but with very few votes. Be sure to add yours to that thread.

I currently have over 30 users that I share with and currently is a pain when I make a new library. Been able to quickly add people to a new one in this method would be great. Also a great way to quickly see who can access that library without checking every user.

Another feature I would love to see - I manage only a small number of users, but often re-organize and ‘play’ with my libraries which often results in forgetting to reset individual user library restrictions. Voted!

Really need this. I have a lot of users on my server, and a lot of libraries.

Would this be a good alternative option?

If I have groups, I don’t need this, but if we don’t get groups, this would be neat.

The new Sharing UI would work perfectly, if only it allowed multi-selection of users.

Lets get this back in the spotlight!

5 years later and this feature is still missing.
I just created a feature request “Know quickly who can access to one library” because sometimes we just want a reminder about who have access to this library

… But I will close it as it duplicates this request …

For now, to know who can access to one library, we have to open one by one each user to know which library they can access.

Managing one library, using the option 3 dots > Share, the window directly ask us to add a new user.
It would be good instead, to display the list of current users having access, followed by a text field to add a new user if needed.

Few hopes at it seems Plex is dying with no evolution anymore …

So close.

If only the Users list were multi-select.

Mod-Post:
Doing some pre-spring cleaning in the forum and I noticed there’s two feature suggestions on this very same topic. While this thread was around longer (2015 vs 2018), the other suggestion has gathered a few more votes (8 vs 5)
User Groups

I’m going to close this thread in an attempt to consolidate the related votes.
This will free up your votes here and give you the opportunity to vote in the sibling thread instead.

My apologies for the inconvenience.
This is why we usually try to cut duplicates earlier :frowning:

Re-opening this thread after a few hints on the specific details to those approaches
