Good morning so I am experiencing an issue with video sharing to friends. I noticed issue before so I purchased a watch guard firewall. My speeds are now amazing download speed is over 230mbps on average and Upload averages at 11mbps. But for some reason the people I share to keep having buffering issues. I streamed from my phone on different WIFI at other peoples homes and on cellular and don’t have an issue. My stream out for remote is set to 720. When I first had this issue a few years ago setting the share quality at 720p worked but now it doesn’t. Could my ISP be causing an issuer with the share?
I’m not quite sure if/how a different router/firewall box will influence your internet upload/download speed. 11 Mbps upload is still quite low when it comes to streaming videos. Have you verified with your friends they’re also setting a remote streaming bandwidth/quality in their clients?
If you can stream ok with that quality, so should your friends (except there’s a dozen of them and they’re all trying to stream in parallel).
11 Mbps is just enough, but it is on the lower end for sharing videos. Sounds like you are using a Cable ISP. If you use “Plex Pass” you should probably set “Limit remote stream bitrate” in the server settings to 2 or 4 Mbps depending on how many simultaneous streams you are sharing at any given moment (2 streams at 4 Mbps is pushing it, and 4 streams at 2 Mbps is pushing it too). Also, make sure you aren’t using too much upload bandwidth for other tasks as well, which might not allow your friends enough for streaming.
In the past I also had 11 Mbps upload. It worked but I could only handle 1 or 2 remote streams at 4 Mbps. I upgraded my ISP service and now I currently have 21 Mbps upload. I have my friends set their clients to 4 Mbps and I have my server limit set to 8 Mbps (so my friends can bump up the quality for those special viewing nights). I usually have 1-3 simultaneous remote streams running on any given night.
Sorry I should have been more detailed. I had an old cisco home office VPN firewall router. My speeds at home were only 30MB download and 5 for upload. I had trouble sharing but after I changed the remote bitrate to 720 at 3mbps. I could actually have 2 friends streaming without issue at the same time before. Then my home network speeds were getting worse and I was having issues at home. I upgraded my router and my speeds were much higher as I said in the original message. So I expected things to get better. but some that had nom issues prior can barely watch one movie. That’s with only one person connecting. Just though it was odd that the connection got worse for friends. I will have them check their speed settings. Thank you.
