Shield freezes on m4v over network, but not remuxed mkv

I have a couple Nvidia shield devices and if I play m4v files with locally connected hard drives using the Nvidia shield as the client and server everything is fine. If I try to play the same files streaming from a synology nas using the nas as the plex server it freezes a few seconds into the movie.

It doesn’t matter what the bitrate the m4v movie is, but alternatively I can play mkv 4k files at 50k+ bitrate just fine. If I remux the m4v files into mkv containers the shield is able to play them as well.

Also, the m4v files direct steam to any apple devices and play fine. It appears to only happen when streaming to the shield. Any ideas?

In Plex Client settings on Nvidia Shield, turn Information Display = On.

When playing movie from local drive, pull up on screen controls (pause, forward, etc). What does Info Display in upper left corner show? Should say Direct Play / Direct Stream / Transcode. If one of the latter two, it will display reasons.

Repeat when playing from NAS. What does Info Display show?

  • Include XML info for one of the problematic movies.
