Shield TV Pro 2019 playback issue with one movie

So, I have a Shield TV Pro 2019 where I run my Plex server and play movies from and a personal rip of the 4k disc of Apocalypse Now’s theatrical cut made with the latest version of MakeMKV. If I play this disc, I get random audio drop outs which lead to stuttering and the image going out of sync and I have to back out and resume the movie for it to go back in sync. An example of this is at around 44:05, I get an audio drop out and the image starts stuttering and the lip sync is off by quite a bit. I haven’t noticed this with any other films and if doesn’t happen when playing the disc on my Xbox Series X with “Let my receiver decode audio” turned on and it passing through Atmos. Any help?

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#: 8.12.0.22657

I also just re-ripped it just to be sure, and yeah, still stutters. This issue doesn’t occur at the same scene on Redux (43:17), which is on the same disc.

I can also DirectPlay the movie to my phone fine.

Also happens on the latest beta 8.12.0.22681.

Edit: This seem to be due to seemless branching as mentioned here. Is there anyway to fix this? If there isn’t, I might have to return this Shield. Fantastic little device but if it can’t play my movies correctly I’ll have to get rid of it.

Are you using the latest 1.15.4 MakeMKV? I’ve been wondering if changes it includes would improve branching support.

Yes, I’m using 1.15.4

Darn, that would have been nice. Hopefully others will have suggestions.

Have you tried using MKVToolnix to rip instead of MakeMKV? I’ve found that it works better with movies that have multiple videos stitched together.

I have also used tsMuxer and UsEac3to to demux the audio/video from the disc to fix sync errors. You can then remux with MKVToolnix.

How would I use those tools to fix this issue exactly? I’ve never used them before.

As long as your disc is unencrypted, you can add the bdmv file on it into MKVToolnix and select the proper playlist file for the movie, then select the tracks you want to keep and remux into a mkv.

You can essentially do the same in the other two programs and demux the audio into a dts, ac3, or truehd file. Both tsMuxer and UsEac3to attempt frame overlap fixes for stitched movies, which can (not always though) correct audio sync issues.

You can find more information online as well.
