Show file names using title instead of file name

Server Version#: 1.21.0-3744
Player Version#: Webapp on chrome
I have tried moving “Local Media Assets” down the Agent list, I have checked Manage>Libraries>advanced to try to find a checkbox to ignore Local Media Assets but there is no longer one. What should I do to have Plex scan the file name instead of the file title?
Strangely I even cleared the titles for some of the files and refreshed metadata and it still kept the old title as the episode name.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

If you are using the new Plex Movie agent, those settings no longer apply. You now configure things on a per-library basis.

Edit the library, click Advanced. If the Scanner & Agent say Plex Movie, then you’re using the new agent.

Scroll down. Look for the Prefer Local Metadata setting. Check to use embedded metadata, uncheck to ignore.

Save changes. Refresh metadata for the library.

See Advanced settings Plex Movie Agent for additional details.

Thank you FordGuy61,
The issue is with TV Shows, not movies. When I get to Edit the Library>Advanced the agent is TheTVDB. I do not see a "use embedded metadata box to check or uncheck. In fact, I don’t see metadata anywhere on this screen. I see “Include related external content” but I have previously unchecked that and it did not resolve the issue. under Settings>Agents>Shows TheTVDB I have unchecked Local Media Assets. That also did not solve the issue. I can’t even figure out where they are getting this information sice I pulled it out of the title of the files.

You’re still using a legacy agent (TheTVDB) – keep in mind those will go away at some point… it’s never too early to take a look at upgrading your library to the current generation agents.

That being said…
Those legacy agents are not managed per library but have their own server-wide settings → see: Settings > [Server Name] > Agents; in your particular case: TV Shows > TheTVDb.

You should see a source (=row) called Local Media Assets (TV). Make sure it is (a) checked and (b) moved to the top of the list of sources. This way it’ll take priority over the other sources.

I think that the OP wants to get titles, not file names. If the file name is embedded as a title, (quit often is in torrents) moving Local Media Assets to the top and checking the “Local Media Assets” would do pretty much the wrong thing.

I may have read the original post incorrectly, though.

True… sending myself a reminder not to respond to threads in half-sleep at 1:30 am  (at least not to respond in threads that aren’t super clear in themselves)

So I gave a backwards answer.
@PlexFalcon : for me there’s still a checkbox next to those agent sources; I can both disable Local Media Assets (TV) or lower its priority.
Upgrading the library to use the Plex TV Series agent will give you the option to disable the use of embedded metadata in the advanced library options (as pointed out by FordGuy61).

Just for good measure it might also be time to update your server. PMS version 1.21.0 was released in December 2020. That’s rather ancient

If I remember the usual recommended way for the old agents correctly, leave it enabled, but move to the bottom. That way local assets such as subtitles will still work, but any embedded metadata will use the information scraped by the agent.

It is the current Beta version for Synology DSM7.0, is the current version better than the Beta for DSM7? Should I upgrade?
PlexBeta

When I attempt to update the Libraries it says there was an error.

I think version 1.21.0 was released long before Plex even started to work properly on DSM 7. so maybe there’s some confusion with the release numbers?

Any specific error messages?

Error
Here is the error I receive.
What is the best way to transition from the DSM7.0 Beta Plex to the current version?

Well, this could have gone better. I uninstalled Beta and installed the new version 1.25.6.5577-7000 and now I get this error
Update
and now we have graduated to
Update3
Strange I can’t access it using the direct.quickconnect.to link but I can access it using the webapp.
Does anybody know why I can’t access via the local link?

Don’t use those quickconnect URLs… try accessing the server through the NAS local IP address instead (http://[Syno IP]:32400/web)

I get the “This page isn’t working” error when I try that. yet the webapp can access the server.

You should definitely upgrade that server version. Given the Syno app center only shows an old version you’ll have to manually install the latest version (public or beta). You can find/download the correct version from Media Server Downloads | Plex Media Server for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and More

The reason I don’t see the server at the link anymore is that I upgraded to the most recent version.

The original issue is resolved by upgrading but now I have this new odd issue that I can’t access the server at (http://[Syno IP]:32400/web) I can access it through the webapp but not directly through the link.

From a system on the same network, try accessing the Plex server via http://[syno ip]:32400/web using an incognito window. How far into the login process do you get?

Do you see the initial screen with, “This application at [syno_ip] is not hosted at Plex…”?

After authentication, do you see the customize your media screen (to pin libraries)?

After that, you should see the “normal” Plex Web home page with pinned libraries, etc.

On a separate note, be aware there are structural changes between 1.21.0-3744 and the current version.

You will notice a /plexmediaserver shared folder. It was hidden in 1.21.0-3744 (accessible via SSH).

The main end-user advantage is that the Plex logs and database are now user accessible.

Like the /plex folder on DSM 6 systems, do not put any of your media anywhere in /plexmediaserver.

If you upgraded from DSM 6 to DSM 7, you can delete the plex user from your system. It is replaced by the system internal user “plexmediaserver” and no longer used by Plex. The /plex shared folder is also no longer used by Plex (replaced by aforementioned /plexmediaserver). It should be empty, except for a migration log file. /plex can be deleted or re-used for other purposes.

in incognito still getting the “This page isn’t working” when I go to http://synologyip:32400/web

If I may assist ?

Please open File Station.
Navigate into “PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server”
Right-Click “Logs” → Compress to Logs.zip

Download that file and attach here
