Show names for audio tracks and subtitles [in all apps]

Originally added a post thinking I was a small minority, glad to see so many others that are heartbroken this has yet to successfully hit public.

Please, get this sorted out!

Ya this is really annoying. Lots of files have several subtitles with the same language (Eng for non Eng bits, full Eng, Eng hard of hearing track, Eng commentary, etc…) and this seems like trivial data to add given its already able to be parsed from the media info.

Please implement what appears to be a very simple change per @squaresmile’s post a few months ago.

Are there any updates to this feature request? I’d love to see this in the future.

Outstanding idea. I have movies with subtitles, commentary tracks, etc and they are all named in the MKV file. But nothing shows up in PLEX, just a list of tracks.

Not sure why this seems to be such an issue for Plex. Emby has an option to “Prefer embedded titles” for the track title display setting.

I will note however that Plex does seem to implement this partially, at least for the iPhone/iPad client. If I go to select an audio track it will show the name as well as the normal information (i.e., language, codec, audio channel layout). However, it doesn’t seem to display this information for the subtitle tracks. It would be nice if it would support subtitle tracks as well as other clients.

Yeah. Wanna know something about that? Do ya really???

Plex already sees the track names but hasn’t been programmed to display them.
Look at the details(Get Info) on one of your movies. You will see the track names.

Sum Bytch!! LOL

+1 Agrree. That feature is much needed.

If this feature ever gets to the implementation phase, it would be nice to be able to edit the names of the audio tracks and subtitles directly in the Plex UI. Just add an option to rename in the video info panel.

That would not be possible unless you’re suggesting the Plex database store an alternate value to override the name as displayed. The names of the tracks are part of the file as it’s muxxed, not something you can easily edit.

Actually, Plex does make a copy of all the information that is displayed on the screen in it’s internal database. Plex doesn’t go back to read the file. So it would be possible to allow editing that info. But like all the other info, none of it would sync back to the file. Any changes would just be for Plex use.

Yeah, that’s what I said. It would just be an edit of the library data, you couldn’t change the file data itself, because it not an easy-to-reach bit of info in the file.

Last night I had to remux a file just to change a subtitle to add the forced flag to it. It was already flagged as the default subtitle track, but not as forced subs, so Plex was not turning it on automatically.

Using the ‘header editor’ of MKVtoolnix allows you to flip the flag without remuxing.
(In most cases)

Man, I’ve been using MKVtoolnix for years and never knew of that feature. I guess I normally was editing subs or stripping out something that required remuxxing anyway, but good to know that’s there.

And there are quite a few posts that talk about “flipping the flags” automatically w/code for many operating systems. I know Otto has one such HowTo floating around.

Come on Plex devs!! Super old feature requests with 100s of the responses, including a code patch. Just get it done! Or hire me and I’ll do it for you!

Will you do it for a t-shirt?

Will you do it for a pat on the back and a hardy hand shake?

Watching movies with theatrical and extended cuts is a pain. Watching movies with multiple commentary tracks is a pain. Switching between subtitles for anime is a pain. All of this could be remedied by just showing the names for audio/subtitles tracks. Plex picks it up already…PLEASE. Swear to god I’ll get a Plex pass if yall add this.
