None of the client apps I use (web, Google TV, Android app) show the release date for movies, it just shows the year. But TV show episodes all show the release date.
Sorry, I meant to say this is for the movie page itself, not the library page. There’s currently no way to view to release date for a specific movie (except by editing metadata in the web app). Like in these screenshots for a movie vs. TV show episode:
