We have some TV’s with the old Plex app and some with the new experience. The new experience has basically rendered the TV’s unusable in the Plex app, especially for my wife who is non-technical. I’m technical and can find things but holy cow, it is not user friendly.
Question is, has anyone sideloaded the old app on an android TV? Does it update to the new version?
The Plex Android TV app is not (yet) updated to the new experience layout.
Which devices/TVs are you using that have the new experience interface?
Two older Samsung TV’s that require a plug in like Fire, Chromecast, etc. Was using a Roku but they put the new experience on it. Read here that Fires with the new OS are not supported by Plex. So I’m just going to get a 3rd gen Chromecast and go through Channels DVR. I wish Google didn’t discontinue them. I am glad Plex hasn’t put the new experience on Android TV and hope the never do.

That is incorrect. See Plex on Vega OS devices (Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select). However, it does have the new experience user interface.
As mentioned, the Plex Android TV app has not been updated to the new experience app. This includes Amazon devices that still run Android TV (AFAIK everything but the FireStick 4K Select). However, it is Plex’s intention to move all apps to the new experience UI. Plex has not provided a timeline as to when that will happen.
Another option is using Kodi with the PlexMod for Kodi plugin.
Many people are using an Ugoos 6B+ and loading CoreELEC + Kodi + PM4K. The combination supports passthrough for lossless audio (TrueHD Atmos, DTS-HD, etc.) and Dolby Vision/HDR10.
