Silent Video - Unknown (AC3 5.1) - Must Transcode To Hear

Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309
Player Version#:6.4.12.6214-of6334f3b-Plex

I have a couple of items that somehow wound up with Unknown (AC3 5.1) for Audio and it play silent in Direct Play or it requires that I transcode to hear anything. I can remux this file and get the language to show up instead of Unknown but these items still require transcoding for audio. This only seems ot happen on Roku devices and I can not find a suitable fix through searching. Everything appears to be the latest version and I am stumped as I don’t want to lose more quality by reencoding.

On a side note, if I do reencode, is there a setting to have as little loss as possible or to only reencode the audio itself?

Thank you

Unknown (AC3 5.1) shouldn’t matter much here, that is just the language the PMS detected, meaning it wasn’t set in the metadata.

Are you by chance forcing Direct Play? That may be the reason it’s silent. We may have detected this cannot play, and will convert it automatically. It’s possible the Roku isn’t detecting support for AC3 5.1, or Roku Volume Leveling is turned on (turn that off), causing the Roku to only support stereo.

We’ll need to take a look at the logs If changing the Roku audio mode and making sure volume leveling is off doesn’t work. Please enable remote logging, close and reopen the channel, then start playback of the video to replicate the issue. Please report back with the time/timezone and plex username when complete.

Note:
The only way to enable/disable that is when the stream is underway - and when you do change it, the stream must be restarted to clear it’s undesirable effects.

Plex should ‘hack’ that function’s label in the app so it reads:
“Instant Transcode”.

Thank you. I apologize for the late response, I was out of town for a few days. Does this feature stay ‘off’ or does it need to be turned on/off per watching?

You need to turn it off while a stream is in progress with the * key.
It does stay off after that.

Yes I do use Direct Play as I am trying to keep my NAS from having to do anymore work than necessary.
