simonjhogan's PLEX Client for LG Smart TV (webOS)

HI Simon,
a few more things:

- the clock has a 24 hour options but it does'nt work

- the app will not log to server if we require local authentication, which in turn is unfortunately needed to not mess up view count by the various users...

- there is no access to myplex, therefore no possible access to shared servers etc

Yeap all known and planned for future ...

Hi crahsHouse,

i have been using the LG appstore for Webos for months now, i don't understan that you can't see it.

i just installed the LG app from the UK store. I too live in the Netherlands which was not included in the LG list.

I had to make a second LG account, switcht to UK on the TV (agreed on a lot of screens) and logged in with that.

Hi, i did the same thing and bought it trough pc at gb.lgappstv.com

All went well but the app won't show up on my tv in the store.

Payment history on my tv shows the purchase but in buyed apps

it isn't showing up. Whats wrong?

Used the same account? You have to change the location of your TV for apps too to see them. It's in the TV settings. (In Dutch: Instellingen>Algemeen>Locatie>Land voor LG-services)

Does the app transcode or stream/ play directly from the server?

I reported color (reddish skin tone) and exposure (underexposed/ dimmer) inconsistencies but have addressed that w a new color profile dedicated to the app on a webos tv. My only major problem now is the app’s inability to play bigger files without the video artifacts. I use a pretty robust mac and good network gear to connect. The video issues are similar when playing from the plex app on an iPad Air and streaming via airplay on Apple TV3. Picture gets pixelated when playing large files (3d and heavy files). This is probably due to ios transcoding the file which I’m assuming the plex webos app is doing as well.

Subtitles work fine on mine. Just watched 3 foreign films and subtitles were perfect. Can you customize the font color and size though. This is necessary when you have bright high-key scenes. The white text becomes difficult to read. Also the play dock should disappear faster as not to block the picture and subs longer than it should . It’s takes 3-4x longer than the webos player and other video players/ apps.

Simon, LG shd lend you a service webos/3D unit at the very least.

So it says my LG "55 isn't compatible on the via the web store. I ran the client perfectly fine via USB. Is it because I have access to Media Link?

2012 model is : 55LM6700

Too bad Simon has to change name and icon, and as there is no alternative nor "official" client on the platform I dont'see why to force him renounce the consistency plus made by using official names and icons.

Anyway....

up for Simon once more!

I just got a new WebOS TV and picked up the Plex app from the store. The only app there that I cared about. I am thrilled to see it.

One request though... would it be possible to add support to adjusting subtitle colors, or make the subtitles have more contrast? Right now the off white text with a very thin stroke around it makes the text impossible to read on some anime series that have a lot of light colors. I tried watching Railgun last night and had to give up after a few minutes.

I can provide a picture of the screen if that would help.

Thanks for making this!

Kane

To all webos users sorry for the subtitles issue you are experiencing .. I don't have a webos TV to test on so it is difficult to test ... I am perplexed as to what lg's qa team did regarding testing on webos ... Can someone please post a video of the issue

Sorry for the delay. Here is a video that shows the subtitle problem and how to fix it.

Well im on the opposite side... i cannot choose greek subtitles... they dont shown on the movie. I choose them fine but they dont show. From web or from XBMC i can choose the subtitles and they work fine. I can live with english subtitles for now. I havent tested the Transcoding since the PC in home that has the Plex Server is with Atom CPU.

I also have subtitle problems myself.

I have some media with embedded subtitles, some with .sub files and some with .srt.

They all seem to be going nuts. I cannot seem to get most subtitles working on any of the media I have on my server. Sometimes they start working in the middle of a movie, they disappear again, they don't display the whole subtitle and so on.

I tried with both HLS transcoding on and off...same result :(

EDIT: I managed to get it working by selecting the transcoding option and unselecting the Use standalone media player for Direct Play content. Seems fine now.

In Belgium cant find plex in the store was using the develop usb but after lg update 4.3 i think it doesnt load only a white screen comes up with 1 button stop app .

Any help would be great till i can buy the app

Hello,

First i`ve fixed some of the translation for the Hebrew language, can you please update?

second, there is a problem with Hebrew subtitle that appears backwards, for example in english: "Hello - olleH", in Hebrew "שלום - םולש".

I`ve tried to find a solution in the Plex server but didn`t find any, tried with other players in through the Plex server and everything is ok, but not with this player for the TV.

Can you may try to add an option for subtitles settings? (Charset, font type...)

Hebrew language is attached

Thanks,

Idan

Hey there.

Is there a development timeline for the app?

There is no defined timeline for development, I add features as I can ...

Below is an FYI list of things for people to know ...

  • the app is only approved for 2013+ devices including webOS (note the app was designed for 2013 models which are full HD for apps, I have tweaked the design to to allow for webOS but it isn't optimised yet)
  • Brazil has special ratings requirements which I am trying to apply for
  • the app is only in lg stores that offer paid apps
  • you can switch countries to purchase it then switch to country of origin and it will work
  • I am a lone developer with a day job and two young children working on this so I will update when I can
  • the app will soon be called playz .. CORRECTION it is now called PLAYz Media in the LG Smart World store
  • the USB version will always be updated, if you use it because you can't buy the app please donate ...
  • shared libraries and channels are not yet supported
  • subtitles are fully supported if transcoding is used otherwise it depends on the TV ..
  • the lg api doesn't provide any way to control subtitles other than to turn them on or off .. So I can't change colour or location
  • turning off integrated subtitles doesn't work for integrated subtitles .ie. mkv
  • lg doesn't provide a native screensaver on LCD TV
  • the app doesn't support local pms authentication, shared libraries or channels at this time

Simon, thanks for this APP. It's more reliable than any other solution (except maybe plugging in directly via hard drive). Everything is working great except for not being able to turn of integrated subtitles like you said on the LG 55UB8500. Keep up the great, work, I appreciate it!

I deleted my post.

after the lg update my app stopped working only get a white screen any help please cant buy the app yet in belgium

As you have been requested to change the name and logo of the app, I am assuming this is not the 'official' Plex app for LG.

However, on the Plex home page, there is stated that LG is officially supported.

Curios then why you had to change the logo/name?

In his Website he stated that Plex. Inc inquired him to change the name although the client is "almost" the same seems no aligned with Plex company.. The LG is supported due the old LG versions (no WebOS) still having their own Media Link Player which is a "official" LG Plex player.

A company must take action to protect their tradmarks when a violation comes to their attention or they lose the right to protect their trademark in the future if someone else violates it.

The other issue is that the application could create confusion in the marketplace. For example, I am new to Plex and I ended up finding this site after doing a Google search. I had no idea when I purchased the app that Simon did not work for Plex and that the app was not an official Plex applciation.

Also, if they let Simon continue to use the name imagine the confusion that it would create in the future if Plex decided to release their own app. And finally, if consumers have the impression that it is an official Plex app and they are not happy with the user experience (i.e., bugs, performance, gui, etc.) the Plex brand could be tarnished.

My Plex app updated and the name and logo has changed. Simon, if you want a professional looking graphic please contact me and  I will help you. The new one looks pretty terrrible.
