A company must take action to protect their tradmarks when a violation comes to their attention or they lose the right to protect their trademark in the future if someone else violates it.
The other issue is that the application could create confusion in the marketplace. For example, I am new to Plex and I ended up finding this site after doing a Google search. I had no idea when I purchased the app that Simon did not work for Plex and that the app was not an official Plex applciation.
Also, if they let Simon continue to use the name imagine the confusion that it would create in the future if Plex decided to release their own app. And finally, if consumers have the impression that it is an official Plex app and they are not happy with the user experience (i.e., bugs, performance, gui, etc.) the Plex brand could be tarnished.
My Plex app updated and the name and logo has changed. Simon, if you want a professional looking graphic please contact me and I will help you. The new one looks pretty terrrible.
You are entitled to your opinion re the logo ... But I am perfectly happy with it as are most of my core user base... So thanks for the offer but no thanks!
Re the name change I was happy to change it and worked with Plex.inc via Elan to ensure all was ok. In my defence Plex have only recently setup branding guidelines etc for 3rd party apps.
It should have been fairly obvious this was a 3rd party app when you first came to my site or read the forum. The app store even states that the publisher was Simon J. Hogan not Plex.inc.
As an aside PLEX is trademarked to a diagnostic company from what I can tell. The PLEX logo was only trademarked in April this year several months after I had notified Plex.inc of development on the application. Elan has publicly and privately apologised for not informing me of the formalisation of the branding guidelines prior to release (https://forums.plex....rt-tv/?p=716642) ...
Any how enjoy the application and thanks for your support.

It's a bit presumtuous to assume that a casual user is going to take the time to read through hundreds of posts and try to decifer who you are or what your relationship is with the Plex company. For all I knew you could have been the guy that started Plex or some guy that works at Plex and decided to take it upon yourself to write a plugin for your LG TV as a side project. Correct me if I am wrong, this thread is in the official Plex forum? I have no idea if PLEX is a one person operation or employs hundreds of people, nor do I care. I am just a guy looking to play movies on my TV.
Regarding your logo, I was only offering to help because it seemed like you needed it. I assumed that it was thrown together quickly to satify the trademark issue. Sorry if it offended you. I am not sure how your logo looks on your TV but on WebOS it stands out amongst the other icons as one that was not specifcally designed for the aspect ratio that it's being displayed at.
For the record, I was not being critical of your use of the Plex name or trademark. I was simply trying to explain from a legal standpoint why a company must protect their trademark if they become aware of an infringment.

This topic is listed under 3rd part apps (i.e not offical Plex apps) ... I assumed most people including casual users would discern that this was not an official Plex app from that, if that was presumptuous of me I apologize. This thread is not the official Plex forum nor does it say that anywhere. I am also 100% certain that no company would allow an employee to build an application under the company umbrella and then allow them to release it independently. But hey I am not a lawyer just the developer who tried to meet a demand in the market.
The logo and the application were designed for 2013 netcast TV's, LG just happened to make it available to webOS users as well. You also need to be aware of the limitations LG place on logo design/size etc. Are you a graphic designer? If you are maybe you could have send me some examples/references of your work before you offered to create a new logo ...
Understand what you were trying to explain regarding Trademarks, I was simply pointing out the background so that others could understand the issue and history.

I landed in this thread by doing a Google search for "Plex for LG TV". I assumed "third party clients" meant that "LG" was the third party. Since I am not a Plex fanboy I do not know the history of the company or the intricacies of their product line.
The biggest problem with your logo is that it is not formatted properly for webOS. This is probably something that you should correct if you are going to sell your product and want it to look professsional.
Regarding my offer to help you with your logo, showing you some examples of my work seems like it would have been a logical second step not the first.
I kinda agree with the fact that the logo is not top notch, however, not something important.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion ... The application and logo was designed for Netcast UI not webOS and when submitting the app you can only specify a logo for the Netcast platform not webOS .. If I had the option I would create something specific for webOS ... Maybe if/when I port the app to be pure webOS based I will modify ...
Until then I would rather focus on enhancing the existing application.
If you feel like designing a new logo for PLAYz go for it send to me and I will decide if that is what I want to use in a future update ... Just remember it has to work on older platforms.
The first version of the app in the LG store did not have the same logo display problem as the new one. Without having access to both graphic files its hard to tell what's different. Perhaps the original logo had a transparent background and the button background color was defined separately?
hello!
i have a problem in this point.
"3) Modify appinfo.json
Use a cutom id to avoid problems
3) Place appinfo.json in simonjhogan's PLEX folder
5) Create .ipk file
Type in terminal: ares-package /path to downloaded version of simonjhogan's PLEX"
the terminal responds to me saying that there is an error in the directory.
where is the folder of simonjhogan's PLEX?
I copy the file into a .json / plex / 237576
where am I wrong?
Wherever you extract the Zip from GitHub.
I.e: Extract the WebContent folder from the zip to the SDK CLI folder (let's assume it's installed on C:\LG\webOS_TV_SDK\CLI for the sake of argument), you'll generate the .json file, move it to C:\LG\webOS_TV_SDK\CLI\WebContent, edit it as instructed then package it with ares-package WebContent. That should create the .ipk file under C:\LG\webOS_TV_SDK\CLI for the rest of the process.
[size=11]Hi abigo, I cannot tell what you are trying to show in your video (a problem or a solution) but here is a video that I did a few weeks ago that shows some of the subtitle issues and how you can hide the subtitles by enabling the transcoding option (In the app under options select the transcoding option). You can see how to do this at 2:30 into my video.

Hi jgalt, When the transcoding much worse quality of the film, so it is not an optimal solution.
