Simple X - A Native 3rd Party Plex Client for the new Apple TV (4th Gen)

I ask the above question as I saw a demo of the nexus player last year where they used the voice button to search local storage WITHIN the Plex app.

Good news everyone…

@Stevenson-Price Great News! Can’t wait to give it a spin later this week.

Congratulations. Now if my ATV4 will ship and show up…

Have you decided on the price?

nice! video demo?

Video demo is right. Even just a 10 second demo or something! The simplex.video site isn’t mobile friendly and the images don’t show much anyway.

I know I keep saying this, but tomorrow - I absolutely promise! I’ve recorded the video but I want to do a quick voiceover so I’m going to get that done tomorrow.

Great. Congratulations on your app! My #1 wishlist for this Apple TV was to have a native app to steam from my Plex Media Server. That has finally come true, thanks to you and I will officially be purchasing the ATV 4 and your app. I will be picking up my ATV 4 from Best Buy when it is in stock in stores on November 4th! Excited!

This might have been answered before, my DTS files will play with SimpleX, correct?

Awesome app, unfortunately not usable for me yet due to the external subtitle files.

Any idea when the external .srt files are supported?

Forgive my naivety as I am new to all of this, but what do you mean? All my subtitles for foreign language films are .srt and SimpleX will be unable to play it?

What he means is that SimpleX doesn’t currently display SRT files by reading the text contents and then putting the subtitles over the video, it displays them by asking the Plex Media Server to “burn them in” to the video (ie. the server reads the SRT files and writes the text into the actual video images). The main downside of this is you need a server powerful enough to transcode video.

I can’t give a time estimate unfortunately, it’s something I’m looking at and would love to do as soon as possible - but I don’t want to give a date as it’s just me developing the app and I can’t say for sure how long it’ll take to code.

what about mp4 with muxed in subtitles using for example plextools (https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/85258/rel-plextools/p1) How that will work?

Thank you for the detailed information Stevenson-Price.

The post you’ve made yesterday about the app being ready for sale, does this mean the app got accepted into the app store or you are finished writing the first stable version of the app.

Accepted onto the App Store!

I have no idea, these may be supported out the box by the Apple TV - I’ll look into this.

Thanks, i’m in the process of buying a new set top box primarily for plex, and the way it can handle subs is the main factor to keep in mind for me

This post is off-topic. Sorry, guys…

I have a lot of Apple devices and I subscribe to the latter. The result is that I never have to worry about files being compatible or deal with annoying issues like stuttering or the inability to skip to any part of a video I like. It’s a little bit of a pain to convert every video before importing, but it only takes a few minutes and I never have to worry about that file again. Personally I use an app called iMedia Converter Deluxe which, unlike some alternatives, has a simple and easy to use interface that doesn’t require you to make 20 decisions every time you just want to convert a file.

I tried iMediaConveter Deluxe… There’s one huge problem I have with this software. It doesn’t allows you to convert a video with 2 audio channels. In my case I have a lot of videos with german and english audio channel. Before converting you have to decide which channel you’d like to convert into your mp4, m4v file or whatever. Am I just missing the option to select more than one channel?

Usuasally I use HandBrake for converting videos. iMedia Converter seems to be much faster though when it comes to converting…

Thank you for the clarification Stevenson-Price. It doesn’t matter to me whether it burns them in or displays on top, my server can handle both. Looking forward to your app next week.

I have one general question, anyone know what the video output frame rate is on this new Apple TV? Someone on the 9to5Mac comment section seem to believe “It doesn’t support video output that matches a film’s native frame rate of 24 fps.” Is that true?

Using an app like Subler to embed the .srt into the .m4v should work without transcoding. I experimented with this using iTunes and Homesharing and my Macbook and then watching the movie on Apple TV 3 and it worked fine, so guessing Apple still support that?
