Simpler/Cleaner Music Playlist Navigation

Problem:

Playlists are currently way more complex than they should be, and navigating them is a frustrating experience as a user. I shouldn’t have to navigate 2-4 levels just to get a nice list that plays music! Right now, If I want to play an entire library, I have to hit the play button on the left side of the screen, and it will only play the first song in the list. If I try to start playing music by clicking on a song in my library, it takes me to another screen, and won’t continue down the playlist! (Someone who develops the interface forgot to use the K.I.S.S. method when it comes to usability).

This also goes to playlists have very limited availability of songs in the list when I scroll down the song-list. Nobody should be limited to going about 21 songs down the list before they cannot scroll any further while looking through the song-list (unless another song is played!).

So let’s say I start scrolling down from the top of my playlist alphabetically ascending (A-Z)…
It only scrolls down 21 of more than 900 songs, and stops! It won’t scroll any further unless I play a song that is already listed! Why the limitation???

Solution:

I want to be able to browse my entire playlist non-stop from A-Z just like I can in ALL other players I’ve ever used. So here’s my request for simpler/cleaner music playlists:

1.) When going into a music library, allow scrolling and playing the entire library non-stop.
2.) When going into any library, playlist, etc, just list all songs in the list with thumbnails.
3.) Allow users to start playing from any point in the list WITHOUT having to navigate any other menus, buttons, etc. , which actually cannot be done right now without putting another frame or window in front of my screen. (keep it clean and simple!).

4.) If I want to sort, I should be able to sort alphabetically by:
* Filename (i.e. “Phil Collins - I Don’t Care Anymore.mp3”), perhaps with the file extension removed though. :wink:
* Artist (i.e. “Phil Collins”).
* Album (i.e. “Greatest Hits CD2”).
* Date (s) added (i.e. “07/22/2016”).

5.) Display in a nice, simple, easy to read format that gives me all of the info I want from the list:
* Artist
* Song Title
* Album
* Length of song’s time-stamp (Count-down of time remaining would be a nice touch, but simplicity is what we are attempting to accomplish here). :wink:

6.) The above things should be common abilities when playing from both a library or a playlist!

In conclusion, I think the best example of a nice player interface is the standard music player that comes pre-installed on Samsung Galaxy devices (Phones & tablets). A nice, clean & simple playlist with clean & simple navigation is much more user friendly, and should eventually have some level of urgency, as usability is key to the success of Plex. I love Plex with the exception of the above usability issues. :slight_smile:

I’m assuming we’re talking about the Plex Web app here. You didn’t mention which client you’re talking about.

If Plex isn’t playing your entire library when you hit the Play button from the Library home page, that’s a bug. I believe some people have reported it, but it is not the normal function. It does play the entire library in my case.

You may want to follow the guidance on this page and provide the information that will help the developers figure out what’s going on.

WRT only 21 items showing on the play queue, I think I remember one of the Ninjas explaining that this was done because of memory issues. If you let the player go through the queue (or in your case, if the player would go through the queue) it would go beyond the 21 items, and viewing the queue later would continue to show what’s coming up. It’s not ideal, and others have mentioned it. We’re hoping for a better solution for this.
