UPDATE: This sounds like a duplicate of the Database Backup/Restore function request.
I currently had to migrate my PMS from a Windows 10 to a WIndows 10 system, and I think there must be a better way to do this. First, I followed the migration instructions to the letter, but I still managed to lose posters for some of the videos. Second, the shouldn’t be a need to copy gigabytes of application files (it took me two days to complete the copy process, and I did not need to copy media, since it stayed on the same NAS). Why is there a need to copy the Plex Media Server files (other than add-ons) to begin with? The ideal migration process should work like any other cataloging application, such as Adobe Lightroom:
- Install PMS on the new server.
- Copy the PMS database file.
- Copy PMS application settings (they should not be in the registry to begin with, but if they do, okay, let’s copy the registry keys).
- Copy the plugins and addons.
- Modify settings to point to the new library locations (if needed).
Everything else must be auto-generated (previes, posters, etc) or already kept in the database.
