Just wondering if Plex DVR can work on 2 recordings at the same time on the same channel and use only one tuner.
This is the use case: I record a show which the channel marathons. The start times are offset a bit, so I have Plex keep recording for a minute longer to catch the end of the current episode. But Plex is also recording the next episode, so there is overlap during that one minute where the last episode is recording and the new episode is recording. Is this using two tuners for a minute since it is two recordings, or just one since it’s the same channel?
I know I could set up an experiment and test by scheduling multiple recordings with overlap and seeing if I run out of tuners, but I thought someone might already have an answer.
It’s theoretically possible to do this with a single tuner is its all within the same multiplex. Whether plex is actually programmed to take advantage of this is another matter. Of course, if plex implemented the DVB broadcast standard properly, you wouldn’t need to be adding padding to recording times as it would automatically pick up true start stop times transmitted by the broadcaster
Yes, Plex uses only one tuner when recording back-to-back shows on the same channel. It still uses only one tuner when you have (x) minutes before and (y) minutes after that causes an overlap.
Confirmed this on 3/22 with Plex version 1.12.1.4871 and HDHomeRun Prime recording 4 back-to-back shows on FX network with 1 minute before and after overlap.

That’s how I assumed it would work, so I was surprised when I first found my recordings missing beginnings or endings. Hope they adopt that standard soon! In some cases I’ve had to trim the ending of one show from the beginning of the next and then append it to the end of the first recording. It is tedious work!
