Can any Plex developer, tell us, why, every time you select a DTS audio-based media, on latest generation LG OLED, complete transcoding (video+audio) happens, instead of only transcoding the audio to a suitable supported codec like AC-3.
Only Transcoding audio and remuxing it on the fly, it a lot less heavy for the server. Also, video transcoding means most HDR formats I tried gets something lost in translation.
That should be commanded by the Plex Client, and be totally independent of the dts or unsupported audio format by the client.
Since LG Oled Video Player has issues with ssa/ass subtitles.(seems they’re not totally supported). The default value is burn them, which means video transcoding.
In my case I have it enabled only for Subtitles in image format. So SRT/SSA/ASS Subtitles should not force the video to be transcoded either when an unsupported audio codec appears.
And also, it should be an option, to force the server to transcode those ssa/ass subtitles in srt format if the client does not fully support them, instead transcode the video as default option. IMO.
Plex Server should be intelligent enough to detect these cases a apply better logic, prolly 10-20% of the complaints in this forum section can be avoided, if video transcode is not enabled in these cases.
Well after using Plex for many years on a LG, I have found it very important to collect and or convert video to avoid Trans coding. If you want a hardware solution look at a Box like the Shield or a Apple TV. There are your options, first option is the cheaper road.
Play within Plex current ecosystem capabilities, is a far more enjoyable experience.
great tools MKVToolNix, HandBrake, MakeMKV
Note: Most DVD with DTS audio have a second Audio track in Dolby Digital which LG support.
Why I should buy new hardware or recurse on third party tools when the software is totally capable of doing it?.
I’m not asking plex developers to recode ‘ffmpeg’. They might is they want to remux on the fly an mkv with Dolby Vision to mp4, but I don’t ask that much
Only to fine-tune the logic behind transcoding choices.
Hey, I’m willing to sign an NDA, and do it myself, if they don’t have the time, or just don’t care.
That’s why I asked, the plex developers if there is some technical hurdle I’m not seeing or maybe commercial ones…
If there are Commercial issues, like DTS licenses or AC-3 licenses. I do see them as a commercial opportunity for Plex. I’m willing to say there are a lot of people that will pay for a plugin that is capable of re-encoding the DTS into AC-3 or AAC on the fly, instead of buying a Nvidia shield.
Since ffmpeg is totally capable of transcode only the audio and leave the video as is.
I’m 99% confident that you can remux in realtime an mkv or mp4, and pipe via http, as it was an original mp4 or mkv. You only need to make sure the mp4 and mkv are created with indexes first or favor streaming, so there is no seek to the end of the stream. The TV will play it in the same way it plays an mp4 from youtube.
To keep it simple.
LG doesn’t need to know or require to know if the content is transcoded or not. You only need to provide a valid container, with valid codecs, and the tv will do the rest.
In case of directplay, means all the codecs and containers are supported by the client, the media file is streamed AS IS.
In the case one codec is missing, behind the scenes plex, or any other media server will transcode that codec into one that the client supports. You can choose to stream the result REMUX/TRANSCODE in HLS which is a live streaming protocol, but you can also choose to stream it as an mp4 or mkv. In that case, the client video player will not know is a transcoded media file or a physical file living in your server.
