Sizing of Videos, and Plex reported resolutions

I’ve recently added some TV show episodes that turn out to have a bit of an odd resolution, Width 1432 x 1070 Height. I guess because of the 1070 height the server is classifying it as 720p, even though its much closer to 1080p.

So I have a few questions about this: 1) Will this mean it’ll get downsized to 720p when played? I’m away from home and don’t have a good way to verify what precise resolution things that are playing are coming in as. Or is that more of a general classification of things that are smaller than 1080p but bigger than SD and it’ll still generally play at the right resolution?

And 2) If that does mean it’s being downsized, would adding two 5 pixel black bars to the top and bottom of the video bump it up into the next category and make sure it’s classified correctly?

I’m sure there’s more detail I’m missing here so please let me know what if any additional information you need!

No. It will only get downsized if there is a bandwidth limitation somewhere.

Precisely. It is purely for user information, to give a hint about the available quality in the file. Playback and transcoding decisions are done with the actual, detailed media info (so with the picture size 1432 x 1070px in this case)

Thanks so much! I’ll have to decide if its worth worrying about or not but as long as it plays correctly, it’s a lower priority. Good to know this is more for classification than anything.
