Fast forwarding takes a LONG time. I’m watching on the computer that’s the media server. The files are recorded with the PLEX DVR. Computer is a quad core i7 with 16GB RAM. My wife noticed that it works quickly as long as you don’t get ahead of the lighter orange bar (buffering?), but if you try to move past that, it can take 10-15 seconds to catch up.
Are there any settings that can improve the response (buffer time be increased maybe)?
A post from '17 mentioned they had the same problem start when files began to be saved as ts instead of mkv.
Sounds like you are saving your DVR recordings as-is. Web cannot play this type of file so your PMS will have to transcode. When you jump past the orange bar, it can take a little time for your server to start transcoding from this new spot.
Try using the newer Plex for Windows dekstop app. Or change your DVR setting to save them as H264, then it won’t need to transcode when playing.
How do I change the DVR setting?
Under your PMS settings, find the Live TV & DVR tab on the left. See https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877347-live-tv-dvr/ for more details.
You want to go almost to the bottom. It’s the part about the transcoder.
Thanks. I have a WinTV-Quad HD. Shows that the setting is “Experimental” and of course the warning about high CPU usage. I’ll have to see if my computer can handle 3 or 4 records at the same time.
I did try the app and while skipping forward is almost instantaneous, the playback was jittery as others have noted.
