Ahhh. That makes sense…Thanks for letting me know. So stuck waiting then for a fix…download speed is soooo slow. I can use network smb to move files onto the tablet in no time at all. May need to download vlc again.
I did the same tests. Switched back to sync on my Tab s7+ and saving to the SD is showing Bandwidth between 122Mbps to 300 Mbps and on the new Download same shows etc are showing between 11Mbps to 34Mbps. Hope this gets sorted quickly (or don’t kill Sync at the end of year until fixed pls!)
Is anyone running sync & download concurrently? I am using download on my phone with no issues, but thinking of switching my tablet (with its sd card and slow downloads) back to sync because its basically unusable right now.
Although are they still planning to kill it at the end of this year? In which case maybe there is no point.
I wonder if there’s any way of formatting the sd card or something as a work around for this.
I’ve switched back to sync for TV shows on my s7+ because external storage is so slow its unusable with download. I’m downloading Movies direct to the SD and using VLC. I keep download on my Note with an SD to test if it’s been fixed. So no issues with running sync and download on two different devices. I’m really hoping they don’t kill sync until they have major issues like this fixed.

We’ve been testing the new Downloads with the help of several intrepid testers in the forum, and we think it’s ready for primetime!
Really? Because a core feature on the Android platform… that is, saving data to an SD card (especially important with media like movies & TV episodes where the data is accessed sequentially) is completely broken! There’s been no updates on this topic from Plex in 2 months and it’s still as broken as day 1 when I was trying to use it for a trip. So what gives, Plex? Can we get this fixed please?
Yeah I saw that announcement and my heart sank too. I posted in one of the other groups a few days ago and Moviefan says its still on their list of things to fix…but it doesn’t give me much confidence.
If they kill Sync off before fixing this bug, then i’ll be moving elsewhere unfortunately.
I’m experiencing the same problem downloading audio playlists in original quality onto a Samsung A7 tablet. Its taking almost 20 minutes to download a single 5MB song. Even dialup wasn’t this slow. Tablet is on same local LAN as Media server, tried 2.4 and 5G WiFi, no difference and its right beside the router. Plex server is hard wired at 1GB. This problem did not occur with Sync.
Yeah same, supposedly down to the fact i’m syncing to an SD Card in my Tablet.
Have gone back to sync on both my devices and its working flawlessly…guess i’ll just enjoy it until they discontinue it, then look for alternatives…shame.
Same problem here.
Any update on if this is going to be fixed? I’m heading on the road for 3 weeks soon and I still have to use the old sync feature since the speed to download to an SD is unusable with Downloads. I’m hoping that sync won’t be turned off until this feature is fixed…and especially half way through my trip…
Just posting here to say I’m seeing the same thing. I’m using a Samsung Tab A7 with a SanDisk - Ultra PLUS 128GB microSDXC UHS-I. I am getting 5-10Mbs with Downloads and 40-50Mbs with Sync. This was copying a 4k tv show, and I noticed Sync was only going about 10Mbs until it was done ‘converting’ the file.
Good news. We think we’ve found the culprit. It’s still going to be slower downloading to external storage just due to how Android 11 is, but it will be faster than what it is now and more or less the same speed as Sync. Should see this fix in a future update. Not the next one, but hopefully soon.
Excellent news, thank you for the update. Looking forward to testing it out once it’s released
@anon18523487 as i noted here and others in this thread have mentioned, unless this download to external storage is resolved very soon we’ll be in a severe bind while traveling unless the Sync feature is retained for some time.
you mention “soon” above but, at least for me, unless “soon” is less than 7 days or the Sync feature removal is suspended i’ll be severely impacted for about 6 months and very unhappy.
There are new Android Beta versions every couple of days, I would expect it imminently but I’m not a Plex employee so I don’t have any insight into this.
I suggest you manually download it from your media server and use an app like VLC to play your media. Just in case.
Same issue with the Sony Xperia 1 III.
Just gonna leave this here. Movie Fan has put together an update post about all the current issues with Downloads. Hopeful for a fix soon!
Plex for Android 8.28.0.29859-beta
FIXES:
- Downloads: improve download speed when downloading onto external storage.
Hallelujah!
Just tested it out and it seems to be working as expected!
Though it seems whenever I try to enter the advanced settings menu, the app now crashes. Not sure if that’s because I installed the APK instead of waiting for the play store…
