Slowly Going Mad over Libraries, Ghost Folders and Files

Server Version#: 1.21.3.4046-3c1c83ba4

Decided to do a bit of pre-spring cleaning, deleted a library in plex I didnt use, moved some files around to a new directory, deleted the old directory and went to create a new library, in the browse for folder, I still see the old directory and not the new one… what’s worse even though the directory doesnt show on Windows Server, I can still select it in plex and it populates the old files… okay… so I scan library, empty trash, still all there… still cant see the new folder… ok… lets try optimize db, clean bundles… same thing… Ok… maybe repair the database… nope same thing… rebooted server, rebooted plex… Nothing in trash to empty…

It’s like its cached somewhere I cant clear… Its not a permissions thing for not seeing the new folder, it has the same exact permissions and its not named anything funny, and the old folder, even though its deleted from windows still shows up in plex when browsing for a new library folder… I can even see some files in the folder on the plex side when browsing, the nonexistant folder that doesnt exist. This is driving me nuts…

What do?

Did you remove or add external drives? If so, you need to stop and restart Plex server, or it won’t notice the changed drive letters.

Deleting a whole library may take a long time, if there were many items in there.
Make sure to give the server plenty of time to finish the process.
You may want to perform a database compression and a deletion of metadata packages afterwards.
Settings - Server - Manage - Troubleshooting

Do also check your main database file for damage:

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 5 minutes
  6. fetch log files and attach them here

Or inspect them yourself. Take a look at the Plex Media Server.log file and seek for messages about database corrupt or malformed.
If you find these, you may have to repair your database.

No externals, already did the debug, but also just did it again, no words with corrupt or malformed in the log file.

Also already mentioned restarts of plex and the troubleshooting options of optimize db and clean bundles. (Also I did a restore of a previous backup of the DB just now as an extra step, same thing, sees old folders and files, not seeing new folders.

Have you tried to use the other web app? https://app.plex.tv
(hard) refresh (CTRL+F5) the web app before adding/editing a library.

Same results (just tried) shows old folders in there (that are non-existent to windows, including files within), not showing new folders. Ive even manually typed the path to the new folder in the add folders, and it says no items in library, even though there are files in that folders, and doublechecked file/folder permissions.

No dice.

You are not running PMS as a system service, or are you?

Not that I’m aware of, Plex only runs when I log into the box, It is set to start on Login. (The only item in services.msc is the Plex update service)

Then I am truly out of ideas, sorry!
I have no extensive experience with the server editions of Windows. It might do some thins differently than the desktop editions, but who knows.

Thanks for the items to try though… it’s per-plex-ing. Pending any other tips, i may try a reinstall, but I really REALLY do not want to do that…

Welp… the madness was self caused by lack of coffee… embarrassingly I’ll let everyone know what I did.

My server is set to sync data to a seperate drive every 24hrs… (can we see what the issue is going to be?)

When adding the new library, I accidently chose the backup location, that was not changed (until it runs a sync tonight) so it was old files/directory structures…

I chose the “live” drive and all seems to be well… that’s some time ill never get back this morning… now I must go make coffee before I do something else dumb.

:coffee:

No worries! Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
