Smart library that updates when file is added [SOLVED]

As a musician I like to have songs I’m working on (aka demos) available to me at all times, but I like to have them available as a playlist, meaning I can hit play on one of the songs and it will play the next one, then the next one, etc.
When I add them to iCloud, for example, they are available right away, but I need to hit the “Next” button, and that’s why Plex is such a great tool.

All I want to do with Plex is add new files to my folder on my computer, let Plex update the library and then have a smart playlist that automatically updates the list of songs based on that “event”.

So for example the folder on my computer is called “Bounces” and I created a new library with just that “Bounces” folder inside. Then I want to create a new smart playlist called “Bounces” as well and every time I add a new file to my “Bounces” folder, it updates the library (it’s already set to do that), and then the smart playlist also adds those new files to it (or removes files if I remove them from my folder).

It seems that smart playlists only work with metadata, which would require me to find a way to use some kind of automation tool to add certain tags to new files inside that folder. Is there any other way of achieving this?
Basically all I want is to add/remove files to the folder on my computer and let Plex do the whole thing and when I go to Plex on my phone, for example, and I check my smart playlist, the new songs are there, or the deleted ones were also removed from the playlist.

Thank you!

Smart playlist in library bounces using track added - within 1 month, that is sorted by date added should give you a playlist of everything added within 1 month with the latest at the top.

I would assume that tracks you delete from the library should automatically be removed from the playlist as long as scan library and empty trash are enabled

Awesome solution. Works like a charm. Thank you so much! :raised_hands:

I noticed that it not always updates the playlist. I need to go somewhere else and come back for it to refresh. Do you know if there’s a way to refresh it maybe via a shortcut?
It updates the library automatically, but the playlist itself doesn’t update. When I click another library, for example, and then visit the playlist, it shows this first:

, refreshes, and then I can see the updated list with/without the songs I added/ deleted. I was wondering if there’s a way to avoid going somewhere first?

I mean, this is already a great solution, so I appreciate you for that!

Also, I wish it was possible to sort the songs by name instead of when they were added. But again, this is great anyway. :muscle:

This is most likely an issue of the Android client.

See if you rather want to use Plexamp instead.

Probably not, because in a normal scenario it is not expected for smart playlists to update within seconds after a filter needs update. If the server tried to do that, it’be under considerable permanent load, just for trying to keep all those smart playlists and collections up to date.

Simply define a different sorting order when creating the smart playlist.

I’m actually testing on a Mac, but on iPhone is the same thing (no Android here). But again, not a big issue anyway.

I have it as well, but I noticed it doesn’t update immediately, similar to how iCloud updates, for example. But yeah, no problem at all. The main goal is achieved which is to have an updated playlist, so all good! :+1:

Thanks! I didn’t notice that. I think it should be inside the lighter gray box to make it more obvious that this is included in the filter, but glad it’s available. I would still like it if this was something we could change on the fly, without changing the filter itself. If we could just click the columns header.
But having it included is also a great option that I thought was not available at all.

Truly appreciate your feedback! Super valuable!
