Smart Recording by keyword

Could you please add the ability to record shows automatically by keyword, as per eyeTV smart recordings. Using rules to combine different requirements to be met, such as recording any show that contains “Cycling” and only record one of the shows, preferably the HD version, if there are multiple copies of the same show playing on different channels at the same time.

thanks

Please, please program this feature. It is the only feature missing to make it a replacement for windows media center, Tivo, and various other DVRs on the market. I would like to be able to automatically record all shows with “James Garner” that are “Movies” and made in the “1950s”.

+1. To be honest this is a really big weakness in Plex DVR.

Would be very practical. Please implement this feature

This seems overlooked. I want to record a show that was announced, but it’s more than 2 weeks out. I would like to say record shows with these key words in the title, but alas, I can’t right now. My only option is to try to remember sometime in the two weeks before the series starts.

Similarly, I’m migrating my DVR functionality from one server to another location. I want to carry over my “recording priority” list, but many of the shows don’t have an airing in the next two weeks, so I can’t add them to the new server yet. I have to go back and remember to add each show once it’s close to airing again…

Does no one from Plex dev pay attention to these requests? There are many things better about Plex over the HDHomeRun DVR, but the lack of keyword scheduling is a huge disadvantage. I want to record all of my favorite team’s football games that ever air now and in the future. In HDHomeRun DVR, this was so simple. With Plex this seems impossible.

Is there anyway to do this or should I cancel my Plex Pass and go back to HDHomeRun?

I will throw my hat in here. I am a WMC user and this is a basic feature in Windows Media Center. I am shocked, like much of Plex, that this is missing. I vote for this, otherwise, I will miss out of Chicago Bears and other such recordings that I cannot “record” by use of the guide. Please fix this!!

I’m coming off of MythTV which has this capability. I suggest looking at all fields available with EPG programs and allow user to specify values with wildcards for those fields for recording. For instance, I want to record all old Twilight Zone Season 4 episodes if and when they air on any channel. Set it and forget it. I could do this with MythTV and it worked great. Be nice to have that capability with Plex.

I opened a new topic with a message, and they slammed the door because this was here already. Here’s what I have to say (after voting for this):

I was skeptical that a master DVR app like Plex would not have this recording feature already, because every DVR I’ve ever used has had it. But no, I learned on the forums, Plex does not have this and pretty much everybody knows about it.

ReplayTV had this. Windows Media had this. This is the primary reason I have a DVR of any kind. If I hear about a new show starting next season, I want to setup a trigger NOW to catch it and check it out when once does start.

I’m a Plex Pass holder and my server is underutilized, because I don’t sit around and browse the guide as a pastime. I know what I want to record and I want Plex to be able to do it for me like every earlier-generation product was able to do efficiently, otherwise there’s zero value here. I have Netflix and Hulu and F1 and right now, they’re winning this game over OTA because Plex just can’t get up on it and meet the requirements.

I don’t know what most of you use Plex for, but if it is for recording, I can’t imagine you not wanting this feature.

For me this is the entire deal. Starting today, because I only just learned that you really don’t have this feature, I’m restarting the clock with this request.

I’ve heard that a lot of people out there have requested this feature already. I want this feature or I’m cancelling. You don’t care? I’m also recruiting everyone out there who uses Plex as a DVR replacement - you want this too, right? Join me and quit if they don’t add it. Vote right now so they see this coming. There are alternatives.

So let’s say six months (of me paying you, that is - remember that part, you’re not just doing me favors). Let’s round it off to 4/1/2021, April Fool’s Day. If there’s no keyword recording in Plex, I’m leaving, and I hope many others are also.

I’ve read some other comments here and I see a lot of “I’m astonished” and “please”.

I’m irritated and I’m not asking. You’re failing on this basic DVR functionality and I (and many others) are paying you while you continue to not make it right. Get yourselves in gear and fix it.

Awesome reply, couldn’t agree more

Another +1.

The only thing keeping me on TiVo is the ability to set up recordings for a search term. It is especially useful for PBS where I want to record all “masterpiece” but every variation of the show is unique in the guide.

A similar thing is keeping my old Snapstream Beyond TV server around. There, I can set up a “Saved Guide Search” that will execute a keyword search once a day against the TV guide and email the results (and optionally automatically set the results up to record).

It’s the one feature I’m not able to easily workaround in my transition off the ancient (but still very good, just sadly no longer maintained) Beyond TV.

Yup - I just started using Plex as my DVR this week - also coming from BeyondTV - this is a great feature to search by Keyword.

This was a great feature on TiVo as well and miss it!

Without “record by keyword” option I don’t think its possible to set a all series recording if the show name slightly changes? For example we have a show “7NEWS Spotlight: Name of the episode” and the name of the episode is different each week. I am guessing there is no way to record such a series without a keyword feature?

Big +1 on this feature. How is this not already implemented?

Also the ability to automatically schedule the deletion of redundant recordings that have not yet been watched (like current affairs and news content which is no longer relevant).

+1 on this. Same issue here.

So I’m still onboard here in 2024 because plex managed, somehow, to let me record only my Ravens NFL games (rather than all NFL or all Monday Night Football) with some creative programming on the guide. The thing is, the functionality that I’ve been asking for is now in there, behind the scenes, but they still won’t release the controls to the end user. It’s so close and so easy compared to implementing many other requested features. I do not get these people.

OMG - There is still no such feature in Plex DVR. I’ve been using NextPVR + Kodi for over 10+ years and have been generally happy with the setup. However, the one downside has been the annual $35 fee for the TV Guide service through Schedule Direct. Recently, I’ve switched to using Plex primarily for its OTA DVR functionality. While Plex is an excellent tool, it currently lacks a crucial feature that NextPVR offers: the ability to record based on keywords or custom recording rules.
