I thought I was able to do this, as I know I’ve set up recordings to record specific college football teams and NFL football teams based on the team name. But I can’t remember or maybe I just can’t do this yet.
Say I run into this situation. I’m a Godzilla fan or I’m a fan of Bruce Willis or something like that. Am I able to have plex automatically record any show with the word Godzilla or Bruce Willis in the title or database information? Seems like a basic part of scheduling, but I haven’t found the ability… however I do remember (and I can see it my Recording Priority list) that I specifically setup Plex to record any show for a specific college football team. Seems like this would just be one step beyond that.
And Windows Media Center did this too. As I mention, if I record a football game it does ask if I want to record all games by either team name. So, it isn’t that much of a stretch. I don’t know if I would call the DVR in beta either since it has been incorporated into the main downloaded program and isn’t in a separate beta download any longer.
+1
I just bought a DVR receiver to use on my PMS (PlexPass) and didn’t even think it would be possible it does NOT support auto-recording by keyword.
Shocking… and returned.
I’ve hacked together a python3 script to do this, it’s very much a work in progress but you can find it here
You’ll need to tweak it a little for your set up (plexURL, Token and probably library ids)
My plan is to set up a cron job to run it every day, I might add a database to it so it can run multiple keyword searches but for now you could just run it for each keyword.
I’m using the EPG URLs and the movies one only returns a few of the actors, whereas the detail page for that airing contains a lot more, I may investigate that further.
I use keyword recordings a lot with Windows Media Center. For example record anything with the word NFL in it or French Open or Golden Globes. That way I don’t have to add it manually every week or every year. It just records it when it’s on. I feel that it should be considered a pretty basic feature in DVR’s.
Please add this soon. I want to get off Windows 7 since it is ending support at the end of 2019 and Media Center is the one thing that keeps me from upgrading my server until I can find a viable replacement. Plex is so close to being that solution but so far no PC based DVR out there is as elegant as Media Center…yet. Considering development stopped on Media Center in 2009, it’s mind boggling that no one has been able to match it’s DVR controls in all that time.
Yeah, I’m in the same boat, changes needed now I’ve got my “new” DVR finally working again.
I started upstating my regular “missing” TV and Films scripts but it looks like the main subscription call has changed a little too.
While that wasn’t working I wrote similar ones for NPVR on windows as that was my backup, so I’m not rushing to fix these, but if I do I’ll post the update code.
Is there a formal mechanism in place to request new features?
I too expected that this would be basic functionality and appears to be missing. I am in the process of migrating from Windows Media Center. (Which can do this very well.) A lot of my shows are currently off season right now so trying to remember to add them to Plex one at a time as the seasons are about to start is going to be a challenge.
