So I see the DVR is still using thetvdb instead of the guide data for DVR recordings... WHY?

I had to take an 18 month break from the DVR because it was raising my blood pressure. Since I built a new server last week I thought I would give it another go.

I see one of the biggest problems still exist! DVR recordings are still labeled via thetvdb. Why? It’s screws up more than it gets right!

Change the default agent of your DVR library to ‘Personal Media’.
That way, only the information from the EPG is used.

But: Changing that may lead to loss of metadata on some already existing files in that library, though.

Well it would seem to me that the guide data that Plex is supplying should match the tvdb… This used to work very well until you all decided to change the data provider… It’s been months now and it’s still a mess!!!

I agree with the above, it’s the guide data that is wrong

If this ever gets fixed, then it will match with tvdb (just like Gracenote did)

well, guide info is future/current info

tvdb is past info (ie already aired)

guide info is channel specific

tvdb is channel agnostic

so, unless/until tvdb becomes and EPG provider, there will almost aways be a mismatch and/or lag time between them.

the guide data from plex ist quite bad. you would not want to use it if there is any other choice. fortunately for tv series there is. thetvdb ist so much better. unfortunately for dvt there is not choice…

In an ideal world perhaps.
But we don’t live in such a place.

The data in the EPG follows what TiVo is getting from the TV stations.
And the TV stations don’t give a damn about TheTVDB. They are following their own agenda.

The data in TheTVDB follows the order in which one particular tv show was aired the first time.
At least that is what’s written down in their rules.
In reality it is often “first aired by an american tv station”. In the case of international content, this can and will differ from how they were aired in their home country.

It is also not unheard of that a particular network is simply chopping up episodes to make double episodes. Or if the content of an episode runs afoul of a station’s policies, they simply don’t air it.

I guess the TV stations must have something against TiVo since they seemed to send better matching data to Gracenote…

Maybe. Considering that at least some of the tv stations are seeing the likes of TiVo as parasites, which cut into their advertising dollars…
I wouldn’t be surprised.

So Plex isn’t using Gracenote anymore? Rovi is the provider?

TiVo, not Rovi.

And yes, no Gracenote anymore, in any way.

Rovi is the parent company of TiVo and was in the guide data business prior to owning TiVo. Us WMC users remember that cluster when Microsoft switched from Zap2It to Rovi.

Rovi took the Tivo name after the purchase. It’s Tivo data now and it still sucks for the most part.

I made the change to the agent. The title is correct but no poster shows up. I guess that’s the way it’s going to be unless I just ditch the DVR again.

The EPG change was “sold” as an improvement to the customer…so far it has been nothing short of a significant downgrade. The end user shouldn’t have to change settings from default to make DVRed shows have correct data…so that’s a really poor recommendation…not withstanding that it doesn’t improve tons of shortcomings since the EPG switch.
