Keep Gracenote EPG data on recorded shows.

Why can’t Plex just keep the EPG data it gets from Gracenote when recordings are completed? There have been posts recently with thetvdb outagages and a lot of other posts re: wrong metadata being downloaded. (Especially with PBS kid’s shows).

I’ve had a lot of success with Gracenote having the correct shows etc, then when the recording is completed, it get’s moved to my DVR folder and new metadata is downloaded from the selected agent and can be wrong. We are at the grace of whichever community member made the entry for that particular show. Also, I also am aware about the enhanced program guide data but if it’s wrong to begin with, that isn’t helpful.

Just figured since we are paying for Gracenote as part of our Plex Pass subscription, why introduce different clients when the data is already there? Hope that makes sense.

What ^ said.

One of the shows I record daily (The Five on FNC) appears with the correct metadata in the guide, but completely different (inaccurate) data once added to my Recorded TV library.

This is happening for me as well with PBS kids shows in the bay area. The show itself is correct, but the episode data is for s%$#. I’m trying to have a library of material for them to be able to watch that’s remotely educational, but they’re getting frustrated because they want to pick episodes by title or have me read the description so they know if they’ve seen it before. None of that information is good for Ready Jet Go or Peg + Cat or (the list goes on) but it’s good in the guide.

I should point out that shows recorded on the main PBS channel (say 9.1) seem fine, but the it’s the sub channel shows (say 9.4) that seem to be most affected.

I have set up a separate library (Type TV, Agent Personal Media)

If i want to keep the metadata from Gracenote, i get recordings to go into this library, no lookup of tvdb is ever done, metadata is purely from the epg

How did you prevent the lookup by TVDB? Is there a setting? My episode title/info seems to be off by one episode for every series that I am recording. It’s happening after the recording completes and TVDB takes over. For example, the Episode for “The Opposition with Jordan Klepper” shows that the guest for the episode that will air tonight, 6/7, is Will Sommer. The episode that was recorded by the DVR yesterday is titled Will Sommer, but is incorrect.

Thanks!

These are the folders i have for my recordings
2 TV based ones, Recorded TV & Recorded TV (Date Based)

Recorded TV - This is just a standard TV Library setup with the defaults, so anything i select to record into here does a lookup on tvdb

Recorded TV( Date Based) - Similar to the above, but i have set the agent to Personal Media Shows, anything i record into this one, tvdb is ignored, the metadata only comes from the epg data

So when i schedule a recording, I pick which of those to record too

If you do this you will need to re create the recording schedules for ones you want changing, changing location of recordings doesnt seem to work (for me anyway)

This is what i see when i view plex
Eastenders has been recorded to the one with Date Based at the end - this metadata is from the epg, nothing from tvdb
The other 2 recordings whhere recorded into the other directory, both have data from tvdb

Hope that makes sense (looks more complicated than it is)

The steps for you to test it

1, Create a new folder for the shows you dont want matched
2, In Plex, add a new TV library, add the folder you just added as its location, then from the advanced option change the agent from tvdb to personal media shows
3, deleted the schedule for a wrong show
4, re schedule the show to record and select the new library as the location to record to
5, check when recorded and it should only have epg data as the metadata

Thanks for this very detailed explanation. I guess my only question, and pardon me if I’ve missed the obvious or am unaware of previous discussions on the subject, but why have the two folders? Why not just have only EPG data always and never utilize TVDB for recorded shows? Thanks, again.

The only reason i have the 2 is that i want most of my shows to do a match with tvdb and pull the data, a few daily shows i get wrong matches so i prefer these to only use epg data

If you only want your shows to use epg data, then just having one library set as Personal Media should work perfectly
