So, Plex is going to add another service that will not work.

Does anyone know how big the development team(s) is/are? I remember when the Roku app was great, then it went to sh!7, then a lot of people started using RARFlix. Plex then hired the dev for Rarflix cuz it seemed like he understood roku development better than what their staff did.

Could things be that the devs have hit the limit to their capabilities? I’m sure all the devs don’t know EVERYTHING across the board. Maybe it WOULD help if the devs posted help to the community…but i guess without looking at the code it be difficult to triage.

I guess the question is, how big and how much integration will Plex get before they can’t expand anymore and HAVE to address what they’ve been putting off.

Elan said recently the ios/tvos team has 7 people on it. We don’t have numbers of users per platform, but that can give you an idea I guess. Android must be somewhat similar, perhaps some more. Roku… probably a bit less.

I think someone even asked for PMS to be open sourced so the community could fix it.

Honestly … that’s not the worst idea: by doing so whatever good code is there could be salvaged from the current mess and developed outside the negative influence of the current management.

Its a stupid suggestion, i mean how can people even suggest this?.

Imagine running your own business, and having a minority of users come ask you to hand over the bread and butter of your business, more or less resulting in the termination of your business, simply so “someone else can fix it” because you clearly are terrible at running it yourself.

Obviously the answer is gonna be no, cmon now, dont ask someone to give up what they worked so hard for.

That question isn’t so stupid as you might think, because Plex didn’t start from scratch. They took a huge piece of freely available work to jump-start their own company when started as a Kodi Spin-Off. Kodi itself is Open-Source, that’s why parts of Plex have to remain Open-Source for as long as they aren’t rewritten.

Well I do not know about the other developers, but for the roku we know the developer knows what he is doing but you could see the Plex environment being forced on him (he used to come out with updates nightly, now once a few months and most of those are fixes). He used to add so many features and customized galore then went to Plex and it was like the other developers could not keep up so he was forced to slow down. That and Plex’s hatred for settings choices.

I agree with everyone here. Everything I mostly care about plex does very bad…like subtitles support, proper opus support, not being buggy as hell…

LISTEN TO THE ■■■■■■■ USERS

Aaaand @elan has retreated back into his shell …

He simply doesn’t care about Plex, now that he has his pet project.

Plex don’t CARE they are now making money, full stop

and it seems there only thoughts are how can we make more money, not how can we improve the core

I also think they don’t care nearly as much as they should, but the reality is, he’s also allowed to enjoy the few successes they get, when they do get them.

Latest beta build of IOS app out today , same old crap. Even after getting PM’ed by not one but two developers a week ago and discussing problems, none of those issues were addressed.

What a joke.

You’re lucky. We haven’t seen or heard from the Windows UWP developer for many months. And we certainly haven’t had a beta build, despite all the problems with the app.

So, if you have a Surface, or some other Windows 10 device, it seems you’re out of luck as far as Plex goes.

Seand a search team!!! God knows what could have happened to that poor fellow.

The situation with UWP is terrible. That said, you can use PMP, OpenPHT or Kodi with the plugin. I don’t even know whythey did both PMP and UWP, when Xbox has it’s own app…

You can’t sync with PMP. Then again, it’s debatable if you can currently sync with UWP…

Glad we at already got an official “ouch” statement for the records. That’s something anyway.

Latest beta is breaking subtitles again on roku and web browsers. Breaking subtittles! In a “streaming” platform… I really need to find a alternative at this point

Just for historical accuracy it should be pointed out that Plex was originally the Mac port of Xbox Media Centre (XBMC). XBMC morphed into Kodi several years later.

You are right … I skipped that part and directly “translated” to today’s situation.

I think the key is communication. For me the biggest issue is that no one from Plex really communicates about what the product roadmap is and what the plans are for addressing the issues. Its almost like the development is done by separate cells which aren’t following a plan. You can tell there is no common code base as core changes should be available across all clients at the same time. Each client is being maintained separately it would seem.

The roadmap/plan should answer a few basic questions

  • Are the development teams working towards a common goal, if so what is that goal?
  • Feature parity across client platforms- Is this a target and by when?
  • what client platforms will be continued to be supported?
  • Common code base for client platforms?
  • When will the issues be resolved?
  • What are the priorities for the next two quarter’s

Is in this discussion also the “sinking” feature activated? (FYI https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1598816#Comment_1598816)

It looks like everything work’s as expected

Perhaps a sale is on the horizon?

For anyone looking at Sync that works try Emby - it actually has a direct function so it downloads the raw file with no transcoding and the directory structure is simple so you can play that downloaded file on anything easily.

I combine Emby/Plex with Trakt so when I sync 5 last unwatched episodes in Emby even though I watch them in Plex Trakt means Emby syncs the correct eps.

Not only sync! I’m using Emby now since some weeks exclusively (My Plex has been put into early retirement!!!) and I’m amazed how well it works. Yes, the UI is not so nice than the Plex UI … but man: it’s almost bug-free!!!

Sync; metadata browsing without delays; DVR that works; Photos that open instantaneously … it just works. A feeling that I’ve almost forgotten while using Plex.
