Soft Subtitles on iOS (Avoids transcoding)

With the release of iOS6 coming up this week, Apple has added support for soft subtitles over HLS, which can avoid transcoding to burn-in the subtitles on the PMS side.

I for one, having a not-so-powerful Synology NAS, would appreciate this implementation.

Is this feature in the works?

By the way, this feature is detailed in a video from this year’s WWDC.

I know  I was in the front row  It’s a great feature that we want implement.

How lucky  Glad to know it is planned for the future. Looking forward for this!

Nice, hopefully it supports multiple subtitle stream types - including PGS.

Unfortunately it will not.
Soft subtitles are text only, PGS is graphics.

Looking forward to see this feature implemented too.

PS. By the way, Tobias, I was on this year’s WWDC as well. Too bad I didn’t know that someone from Plex team was there, would love to meet!

Nope Apple supports just one format webtt iirc.

I would love to see this implemented.

I would absolutely love this feature, upvote. The greenish aura around subtitles from the transcoding always annoys me quite a bit.

+1 for me also as I can’t watch my TV shows via plex without stutter and have to use Ds video instead…

Love the Plex UI

Would avoid transcoding when syncing a movie with (the right) subs…

Update : I read now this is for streaming? Can it be used to avoid the transcoding when syncing?

In this case I was talking about streaming , but soft subtitles could be used for both streaming (HLS) or syncing (MP4). I’d definitely be up for that!

This would be great, especially because it would fix that bug where the last character of a subtitle gets cut off. Very annoying!

I vote for it.

Since I own an iPad 3rd generation I am watching tv shows and movies by playing them on the iPad and Airplay it to my Apple TV 3rd generation.

There are two features I’m still missing which will make my situation PERFECT, subtitles is one of them. Please make it so.

Any update on this, now that a new iOS version is released?

Do we have support for soft subtitles in the queue?

Or is it already there, but only works for some subtitle formats?
