[Solved] No more direct play, everything's transcoded

PMS: v1.14.1.5487

Hello guys,

I have sort of a strange problem, that suddenly any file, any format, any codec etc. is no longer directly played, but transcoded. Format, size of the file etc. doesn’t matter. It’s all transcoded. I’ve already taken a brief look into the logs, but can’t find anything suspicious with my eyes. Is this maybe a common problem on the current PMS? I don’t know what to do, as not even my local devices are able to play diretctly (Plex Web for instance). Remote access is the exact same thing. Doesn’t matter which format, container, size, codec - all transcodes.

Any help would be highly appreciated :slightly_frowning_face:

im in the same boat. It started out of no where. I am on 5470 though and have held back on updating because of what I read on these newer updates.

Use the hosted web app https://app.plex.tv/desktop
Click on your server’s name on the left side.
Does it say ‘Local’ under it or ‘remote’ or ‘indirect’?

web_server_selector

@OttoKerner I access plex web over app.plex.tv and it says ‘remote’ to my wonder. It should say local right? How can I achieve it being local? And another question: In which cases it says ‘nearby’?

Oh that would be great if you could help me on that

‘Nearby’ = local

Which web browser are you using?
Don’t try Edge, it won’t work.

If you are already using Chrome or Firefox, it might have to do with ‘DNS rebinding protection’.
see (german) HTTPS Verbindung zu PMS ab Version 0.9.12.3 mit Fritzbox (DNS-Rebind-Schutz)
If you can’t find these settings in your router, you might have to go back to ‘Preferred’ for ‘Secure Connections’.

@OttoKerner Thank you so much! I was able to add plex.direct in my fritzbox (I have a new one since a couple of weeks) and the server now displays as “local/nearby” on Plex Web. However it still seems to transcode everything, but the video itself. Here’s a screenshot I made from Tautulli. I set “secure connections” back to preferred, but it’s still transcoding. Is there anything else I can try?

PlexTranscode

Btw: It seems like it solved the laggy server settings we were talking about earlier the day at least

That’s OK. Your web browser doesn’t have an AC3 decoder, so the server needs to transcode the audio to AAC. This shouldn’t put too much pressure on your server though.

Oh okay! Thank you very much Otto. Once again you enlightened me  Would that be different on other browsers then? Like Chrome? I initially only switched to opera, because I thought it might solve the ‘laggy’ server settings

EDIT: It didn’t solve the laggy server settings to my regret

No, it won’t. Plex simply won’t play AC3 audio on a browser.
