Some clarity on Plex Cloud...

Is Plex Cloud actually “dead”, as is suggested by one poster, or is it in the works still but now will only support Google Drive or Dropbox?

Can we get assurity as to the likelihood of it coming to fruition with either of those storage solutions? I don’t want to go through the hassle of paying for and transferring my content from Amazon Drive, if it’s a shrug at best…

Definitely the latter.
With Amazon having been the best fit for Plex Cloud, it no longer being an option basically has it being “dead” for most users. This also doesn’t bode well for the other storage options, but as of right now they are still going to work for Plex Cloud.

Have you looked at the updated Blog?

Revised: December 15, 2016
A few weeks ago we shared with you that we’ve had technical challenges integrating Amazon Drive with Plex Cloud. The team has worked to address these issues and to expand storage options by introducing support for Google Drive, Dropbox, and Microsoft OneDrive, all of which are working great. Unfortunately, the challenges with Amazon Drive have proven insurmountable at this time, so we have decided to remove Amazon Drive for the foreseeable future. Current beta users with a linked Amazon Drive account will no longer be able to use Amazon with Plex Cloud after December 31st 2016.
We look forward to coming out of the beta with multiple popular storage options that provide a simple, seamless, and beautiful experience. Thanks again for your interest in Plex Cloud!

It works OK but it no longer is going to support Amazon Cloud. Therefore for many of us it is dead but, for those that are willing to risk Google enforcing their policies or for those that can afford other service or for those with fairly small libraries it is still viable and even seems to work pretty well.

It is not “dead” it is just for many of us the price has jumped dramatically. That price increase has killed Plex Cloud for many people and may make it less desirable for many more.

To add onto the above, the options available now are also pretty horrid.

  • Microsoft has no option for OneDrive that is greater than 1TB
  • Dropbox will suspend your account if it gets used too often and is stupidly priced at plans higher than 1TB
  • Standard Google Drive is also stupidly priced at plans greater than 1TB
  • If Google starts to enforce their policies that they have listed on their page, then Google for Business will also not be an option for the individual user

Here’s a snippet of an old email I received from DropBox when I only used it for Cloud Sync:

“This email is an automated notification from Dropbox that your Public links have been temporarily suspended for generating excessive traffic. Your Dropbox will continue to function normally with the exception of Public links.”

…I had 3 people using Cloud Sync.

Appreciate the responses. That revised statement from today definitely clears things up. Thanks

I don’t think Dropbox Business is overly expensive ($15 pp/mo) considering the scale of some people’s collections. These guys have to make money and if you’re uploading 50 TB, like some people have, and have more more than 5 users, I don’t think even Amazon can make money on $60/yr.

That said, if it does seem too expensive, maybe it’s an opportunity for someone to produce a more affordable cloud service aimed at Plex users. Or perhaps Plex should look at encrypting files (or maybe an enterprising dev can create an addon?) so Cloud providers don’t know what’s going on. That said, the traffic would still likely be an issue without a business account.

Actually Dropbox Business isn’t $15 per month, it is $15 per user per month and you need a minimum of 5 users. Actual total is $75 per month.

If you pay for a full year instead of monthly, then that comes out to $62.50 per month.

I agree with you 100%
I said some of what worry you in my post
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/249603/about-plex-cloud-amazon-drive-and-what-next#latest

As i wrote in a other theard.

“There is a service called hubic.
10TB für 50€ per year.
There is just one limitation.
10 Mbit up and download.
https://hubic.com/de/offers/
Maybe this helps.”

I think not many people will risk there money and data on google enforcing their policies

I think Plex should consider other features like DVR is a lot more better

I hope they listen or at least reply to us !

It was always dead, It’s mind blowing that the Plex team thought it could work and wasted the development resources on it that could have went to improving the core product.
