Some video is buffering

Server Version#: Version 1.21.0.3616
Player Version#: Version 4.43.4

Hi. I just get a synology nas DS220+ and i installed plex on it. It’s work very well 99% of the times but on some video, i get buffering and slow load of the video (not even fast for be able to read the video without pause). I do many search and try many options but don’t find the way of optimize this buffering. I don’t think that it’s because my internet speed, because i am able to read fast, without buffering, using DS file. Although, because everythink is good with DS file, with sometimes better quality than Plex streaming, I would like to know if it’s possible to have Plex working like DS file (I mean that not transcode or anythink, just read directly the file) ?

Thanks for help.

Here some logs that i have get:
Plex Transcoder Statistics.1.log: https://pastebin.com/85LCvA4q
Plex Transcoder Statistics.log: https://pastebin.com/qkGjk5mS

And another one (can’t make more than 2 link in one post):
com.plexapp.agents.localmedia.log: https://pastebin.com/uJtfL0ST

Direct Play very much depends on what your phone can play and if Plex is aware of that capability (e.g. if your phone doesn’t tell Plex it can play certain video types, Plex will try to transcode to a more common format).

Also keep in mind you seem to be playing those videos through the Plex Web app in Firefox. Browsers have the most limitations when it comes to video playback. You cannot compare that to using the DS Video app on your mobile.
For a qualified comparison you should use the Plex app on your Android.

As for the specific transcoding… it seems the video is being transcoded for 2 reasons:

  1. the browser does not support direct playback of h265/HEVC video
  2. the browser does not support the direct presentation of your ASS subtitles

Thank you for your answer !!!

I tried in web app, thinking it’s best in video playback… So I tried in my android app, here new logs:

com.plexapp.agents.localmedia.log: https://pastebin.com/eAparVCM
Plex Transcoder Statistics.log: https://pastebin.com/m20145QN

Direct Play very much depends on what your phone can play and if Plex is aware of that capability

So, if i get buffering but if i can read it from DS file, it’s not normal ?

the browser does not support direct playback of h265/HEVC video
the browser does not support the direct presentation of your ASS subtitles

Another thing, it’s that i have some other video with same h265/HEVC video and with subtitles

Thanks again for you help !

(Note, that, in browser, when i go into file station, and right click on the file for play it, it open on a new browser tab and read it without stop for buffering. Perhaps it’s just a question about transcode algorithm that used but I thought it was good to clarify)

Little up

It’s something that i don’t get. You say that:

those formats are NOT supported by the browser.

But, in fact, i can open the file in my phone and read it using my video player. So, if i understand, they are some problem on Plex for detecting that this file can be read it without require a transcode ? Or is it means that Plex have his own video player and this player is less capable than other players and it’s why Plex need transcode it on the NAS ?

Anyways, I understand what is the problem, and seems like that actually, only solution for me if I want read this files using Plex is to have a more powerful NAS. (PS: is it possible to change NAS CPU ? I will do some search but if you have informations, I take it)

There seems to be a misconception on how applications or video playback is working.
You can have a phone that supports playback of the video. If that’s the case, an actual video player can use that capabilities to play the video.
The browser however is not designed to be a video player… it certainly can play videos – but only in a very limited way and for very certain formats. Browsers and web apps running in your server cannot play everything the underlying phone can.

Before replacing the NAS etc. … have you considered using the native Plex for Android app on that phone of yours?

As for replacing a NAS CPU… I’m not aware of any models where you can upgrade their internals.

I have same problem on the Android app. I have shared some logs on my comment above when using the android app. In fact, I don’t really use browser, but thinking that using browser will be more powerful. It’s why my first logs are done using the browser, but after your comment, i done same tests on the android app.

Like trumpy says, looks like changing cpu is not possible (i have a more powerful cpu available additionaly  ). Reading this video on Plex will be complex looks like. Too bad, 99% of my library work well so i will just use DS file for this files that don’t work
