I just upgraded Plex server to: 1.19.4.2935-79e214ead (I’m using Synology NAS).
I was able to stream movies fine on my phone while using data (4g LTE) before I upgraded.
Now I’m getting the error:
“Something went wrong playing your media. Please try again. Could not direct play because: App cannot direct play this item. Direct Play is disabled. Could not transcode because: not enough CPU for conversion of this item.”
I was able to direct play these video’s on my iphone prior to upgrading. The only thing that has changed is that I upgraded the server software.
Directplay was already activated on ios. I couldn’t find a switch for DirectStream.
To ensure Directplay is activated, I turned “Automatically adjust quality” off, and “Limit Cellular Data” off, as well as “use low quality on cellular” to off.
I tried turning these on and off in case it wasn’t registering. Finally, deleting and reinstalling Plex for ios fixed the issue.
Thank you so much for your time nevertheless. If the problem occurs again, I’ll update the thread.
This issue happened again on the ipad. Similar error message. I had to go to settings, and toggle some settings on and off again for it to work (directplay, automatically adjust quality, etc.
Okay. So I don’t understand exactly what is happening. For some reason this is working on my phone, but not on my ipad. I’ve tried disabling transcoding on the client side (in ipad app), but it doesn’t work. It’s quite inconsistent behviour. I’d love to see an in depth blog post about how to deal with this stuff. This is important for people who don’t yet have a powerful NAS. It definitely encourages me to buy one just to stop this annoying rigmarole.
It works on my iphone, so it seems possible somehow…
