Sometimes transcoding due to container (null) not supported?

Around 3 in 10 recordings are being transcoded on playback due to “container (null) not supported” which gives sluggish performance and bad fast forward / rewind. Other programmes recorded from livetv are fine, other video files (not from live TV) are fine, too. Why is this? Using Google TV, Linux (Netgear ReadyNas 512) server
