Sony A95K (Android TV PMP App) - TrueHD Passthrough Not Working

Hi,

Passthrough of TrueHD isnt working on the Android TV version of Plex Media Player App, it passes through all other formats, just not TrueHD. True HD passthrough is working on the TV as i have an Nvidia Shield connected, and this is being passed correctly to the external receiver.

Android TV Passthrough of TrueHD = NOT working (transcodes)
Nvidia Shield Passthrough of TrueHD = Working Correctly

It never will unfortunately, thats down to restrictions set by Sony.
Best you will get with a TrueHD signal via the Android tv app along earc to your DN-1080 is EAC3.
Stick with your Nvidia shield to carry TrueHD.

Hi,

Could you clarify the Sony set restriction further?

Thanks

No known TV supports passing TrueHD audio from a TV based app to audio equipment attached via HDMI-eARC. It is a TV manufacturer restriction. It applies to all TV based apps, not just Plex.

Some TVs support TrueHD audio passthrough from external devices (Shield, Blu-ray player, etc) to audio equipment attached via HDMI-eARC.

To determine what audio formats are supported for passthrough from external devices, look at online TV review sites. rtings.com tests audio passthrough from external devices when reviewing TVs.

How is it, if i play a media file with a TureHD/Atmos audio track via the Android TV Media player that it passes TrueHD/Atmos to the receiver correctly then?

What app would that be Dan? Id like to test that, have the 1080 as well.

Its the generic one that comes with Android TV… called “Media Player”… purple icon.

And are you viewing the movie through USB or DNLA?

Currently playback through USB…

Media Player = TrueHD Passthrough PASSED
VLC = TrueHD Passthrough PASSED
Kodi = TrueHD Passthrough FAILED

Ive been trying to use another app for DLNA/Network streaming but for some reason im having issues with them seeing/connecting. I’ll continue to test.

UPDATE

Right i finally got VLC to stream from an SMB share with the same media file and it is passing TrueHD/Atmos… so this is definitely a plex app issue and not a limitation of the TV.

@Suddzz @FordGuy61

Update above… TLDR this is a Plex issue.

Mmm, ill get alook sometime tomorrow evening. :+1:t2:

I was curious about this so retested my Sony XH95 which is connected EARC to my Denon X6700H, with full Atmos 7.1.4 setup.

Copied some content onto a USB stick and plugged it into the Sony XH95…

The internal “Media Player” app would produce no sound at all with any TrueHD audio tracks.

VLC produced sound on the TrueHD audio tracks, however the Denon X6700H reported only 2 channel PCM.

This was also the case with files accessed over SMB.

Now it may well be possible that the Sony A95K might have different capabilities than the Sony XH95, but in truth I doubt it.

@DanJD … Please retest and perhaps if you can show us some pics or screenshots of what your AVR is reporting.

I still think it is likely that no TV supports TrueHD or DTS-HD audio passthrough when using internal apps, but does only via externally connected HDMI devices.

No audio at all from USB drive.
Info does report as Dolby Audio-TrueHD.
VLC does report TrueHD as the codec, and there is audio but my DN1080 is reporting as DD+
