Please explain passthrough to me

Can someone please explain to me how I can get DTS-MA + TrueHD to work on Plex. It does not work through Android TV app. I have passthrough on everywhere on my Sony X90K and in the app.

I have a Sony STR790 reicever that supports 7.2 HD audio.

Plex will not passthrough HD audio to reicever so I bought a Dune HD Pro Vision 4k. The Dune app passes through EVERYTHING no problem full HD audio.

However, once I load plex (its not offically supported on this media player but it works) It still will not pass dont matter what I do.

Is the sheild really the only device that can do it in 2025? Plex is slowly becoming useless to me as I only make remux and full RAW discs lately.

Can someone explain what I am doing wrong or the limitations? The plex forums just have too many problems and all differ I cant find a posts that really gives me a straight answer.

All I want to do is play my files at the higest quality.

I have a Dune Homatics r 4k Plus and DTS-HD MA/TrueHD needs Android 12 or newer. Since it’s not officially supported on your box I don’t know exactly how Android apps are actually working or if that even applies to you.

I manually updated to Android 14 and that fixed my issue but Plex still isn’t working quite right.

There is no DTS-X and any Dolby Vision files with DTS-HD MA 7.1 never even start playing, with an infinite black screen loading wheel. 5.1 plays fine

"Force DoVi Profile 7 also doesn’t work and those files are played as HDR10 but that may be expected on the box you have with different specs.

I have been using Kodi with PM4K and everything is working perfectly. I suspect that’ll work for you but if it doesn’t, the only thing I can suggest is that you install CoreElec and run PM4K through that.

If your main objective is to run remux files at the highest quality I suggest you return that box if you can. Dolby Vision Profile 7 (FEL) with full audio support can only be handled via CoreElec and only on a handful of players. The AMB6+ is the preferred box but the one I have will also work.

The device you want is the Ugoos AM6B+ as it does full audio passthrough (DTS:X Dolby TrueHD ATMOS etc) and full Dolby Vision FEL Profile 7 which is the Dolby Vision version from 4K blu-ray disk.

Like you I mainly rip blu-ray and 4K disk for my Plex library and this device is the only one that plays everything accurately as intended, full quality. Here is a reddit thread that may be on interest to you if you decide to get the AM6B+. TV apps won’t give you full audio passthrough either especially Sony TVs which I also have. Thanks for looking out man but I am aware on the AM6, you can flash the dune as well apparently. The thing is I rather not use corelec as im not a big fan. The dolby fel doesnt matter cause my TV is an x90k which I dont think supports it.

I am just wondering why I can passthrough HD audio through the android dune app but not through the plex app on the media player it self.

Also, why can it not pass through from the TV app either. I am just trying to understand the reasons and limitations. Why is the sheild the only media player that can do this through the plex app. Apparently it still has problems with TrueHD I hear?

The dune works great for everything. Its just I would like to only use it for my Blu-ray raws as that was the intention. Only once I got it I noticed I can add the plex app and tried it out but it still only passed the core dts 5.1 instead of dts-ma. Again, the dune app itself can do it no problem as I have all my media added to it that I have added to plex + the raws

Thanks I might try the kodi route. The dune app itself is really nice and works great for not being plex with metadata.

I think the Sony X90K does support Dolby Vision? Sony X90K/X90CK Calibration Settings - RTINGS.com
I heard about the dune boxes and they do seem really good from the specs. And yeah I only went the CoreElec route since it was the only way to get everything to play in full quality with all the audio/video codecs supported via Plex Mod 4 Kodi.

Yeah that’s where CoreElec comes in. I know you said you’re not a fan (neither am I really) but it’s the only way to get everything that you describe outside of a Shield Pro. I don’t know if its a licensing issue but not many devices do real passthrough. Although the Xbox Series X/S game consoles do passthrough as an alternative but have some video issues with certain formats.

If you can flash your Dune it may be worth trying on an SD card, and then install Plex Mod for Kodi and test out passthrough. Once setup you can also bypass dealing with CoreElec completely and just have you Dune boot straight to Plex if you like. Best of luck to you man!

It does support dolby vision, just not dolby vision FEL.

Thanks man I guess there is no one size fits all solution. I just find it mind boggling that plex cant do this.
