Sorting an album (music) collection only works to a point then just stops

I have a collection of 124 albums. There is no way to sort them automatically, so I began sorting them manually, in the Windows desktop app. The first 50 or so went fine. Then I noticed some albums would resort themselves at random. I found the only way to get things to stick is to move an album, exit the Music library, then re-enter the collection and hope for the best. Eventually the albums stopped sorting at all. I could move them, but they would be back where they were when I re-entered the collection. There were also a few “Oops something went wrong” messages. I tried switching to the web interface, no difference.

Anyone have a clue how I get around this malfunction?

I have a bit more information. You can sort the albums, but you have to work for it. If you want to move an album from, let’s say, position 98 to position 5, the logical thing is to drag the album up to the top and place it in that position. But if you leave the collection and go back in, you’ll find the album has only moved to maybe position 58. So you drag it up to 5, exit and enter, and now it’s sitting at 22. (I’m making up these numbers, there’s no pattern.) Eventually you will get that album where you want it, it just takes a few tries.

How are you trying to sort them, as in what order/criteria are you expecting?

A custom order. I’m not expecting Plex to sort them for me. I’m expecting Plex to allow me to sort them manually, like any other collection. And it does, to a point. Until it doesn’t anymore, or it throws an error.

Last night I think I discovered the trick. If you drag an album far enough that the screen scrolls up or down, the move won’t stick. If you move it one or two rows at a time, so it doesn’t scroll, you can move the album successfully. It just takes a few hops.
