Spinning pinwheel tuning certain channels ONLY using Apple TV, works fine elsewhere

I am having a strange issue where some channels never tune in on my Apple TV. I just get the spinning pinwheel forever. However, trying to tune the same channels using a web browser works perfectly. I am at a loss.

I figured out the problem. In the DVR settings I had selected “Highest Quality” for the transcoder. This appears to only work for some channels when using the Apple TV app. If I select “High Quality” instead it works fine.

I’ve had a similar problem but mostly with one or two channels. If I select a ‘good’ channel it spins for maybe 15 seconds and connects. It doesn’t connect to a ‘bad’ channel unless I go to a good channel first. I’ll give your suggestion a try. Under Settings > Live TV & DVR > DVR Settings I have Resolution: Prefer HD on the server but don’t see Highest Quality or High Quality as options. I’ll look on the AppleTV.

In the Mac Plex app under Settings > Quality there is an option for Video quality. Options include 0.2 to 20 Mbps. I found a similar option on the AppleTV (latest model, tvOS 2021). It was set to the highest level. When I dropped it to mid values, around 2 Mbps, streaming was much better. I wonder about my home wired network. I ran into this problem when I tried out my new M1 Mac mini (using Rosetta 2, for now). I should go back try that to see if I can get it to work without pauses.
