Just dreaming a bit - is it valid? … or a nightmare?
I want to be able to use my “TV Shows” folder for current recordings (e.g., News, Chicago X, etc.). Then I want to put the Series shows that I want to keep long term (e.g., GoT) in a 'TV Series" or Archived TV" folder.
In that new library, I would use the same Scanner and Agent settings (as found in the Advanced tab of the TV Shows library.
Before I try it, does anyone see a downfall to doing this? Will the User apps still see it properly?
Why the need to separate it?
If you only want to do it to physically separate the media – you can have media from multiple top-level library folders linked to the same library.
If you create a new library for some of your media, you’ll need to (re-) share that with your friends.
Might be easier to create a Collection for the “current recordings” if you’re looking to have them broken out in Plex to find them easier or keep them together vs the physical separation of the files. Collections can be added to library recommend screens or the main Plex home screen as their own hubs as well.
Maybe set it up as “Current Shows” and tag the series with the collection name. Or you could try to create a Smart Collection using filters maybe with release dates… but that’d likely get finicky.
Moving files between libraries or to new libraries loses some data because it’s treated as a new item reference so things like watch history and when it was added to Plex resets. This is one reason it’s best to avoid creating multiple libraries anymore.
If you just need to separate out the files themselves but it’s okay for them to be in the same library then you can add both folders to the library and if you add the new folder before moving files to it then the shows won’t lose that associated data (watch history etc).
