So I have these captured episodes of shows and I store them in separate directories. My Plex server smushes them all together in the Player. What is the best way to separate them so they are organized for viewing. Right now all the episodes of all the series are just jumbled together? I thought separate directories would keep them organized but not so?

I’m not exactly sure what you’re describing but when it comes to naming and organizing your tv shows this is the best place to start

https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

If you’re still having trouble you can post a few screen shots of how your shows are organized in your file system and how they’re showing up in Plex

So I have several series downloads in separate directories. The scan does not keep the episodes separate in the display of the library. I have experimented naming the directory TV Shows but that did not alter the organization.

It looks like you’ve put your TV shows into a movie library.

You need to create a TV and a Movie library separating those items on your file system so you can point Plex at each one

When you create a library you have to pick the correct type and point it towards the correct folder on your machine

In the tree on the first screen shot you would point your TV library at the “/TV Shows” folder and the Movie library at the “/Movies” folder

If you accidently point a library at the “/Media” folder all your items will be combined

3 dots next to the library → Manage Library → Edit → Add Folders
See what folder you actually added

OK, you got me on the right track, I still have some things to learn about Libraries and naming of content. I have the shows divided into separate folders now I need to learn the naming conventions of the folders to correctly label the show titles.

I am struggling a bit to become more knowledgeable about Plex. I have tried some Youtube videos and support articles. If anyone has recommendations on learning Plex I would love to hear them.

The simplest setup is what you see above

Just to have one movie and one tv folder on your computer (you can have more, I’m just making this simple for demonstration purposes)

Create the Plex library pointing at the correct folder

Movies are pretty straight forward. The name of the movie with the year in parenthesis

The Matrix (1999).mkv

TV shows are the show folder, season folder and episodes with a s01e01 format

Black Mirror (2011) ← show folder

Season folders

The TVDB and TMDB are the sources for TV shows. If you ever need to double check naming or organization, check there
https://thetvdb.com/

The default for the tv library is the TMDB show order
You can keep that and name your shows by it or switch that to the TVDB
3 dots next to the library → Manage Library → Edit → Advanced

LIBRARY EPISODE ORDER 2

My suggestion is that you switch to the TVDB for your library and use this

This pulls the show order and naming directly from the TVDB and you can rename the whole show or multiple seasons in one click
