I cannot get the option for the plex media server to start at the login to work. I always have to start it manually. What is the fix for this?
Normally, the installation program will put Plex server into the ‘Autorun’ group.
If this doesn’t work on your computer, something is preventing the installation routine from doing so.
Usually, this is an anti-virus software.
Take a look into the activity log of your anti virus.
Maybe deacxtivate it and then run a ‘repair’ installation of Plex Server.
I’m having the same issue. It started randomly a few weeks ago. Plex has the start at login option checked and shows up in the msconfig startup list. My AV is Microsoft Security Essentials and has nothing at all listed as being blocked.
I am using the current Plex version: Version 1.15.4.994
What happens? And what doesn’t happen?
I have only 1 one user account, it has no password. This is my primary desktop. Powering the machine on boots directly to the desktop. Plex simply does not start until I start it manually, where it used to start itself. Once it’s running it works fine.
With “it doesn’t start” do you mean
“it is not opening a web browser window with the plex web app”
or
“the Plex tray bar icon doesn’t appear”
The former is not necessary.
I meant the tray icon, there are a number of other things which start at login such as Steam, Razer control whatever, Discord, but Plex wasn’t. I have trained my wife to turn the computer on when she wants to watch something because I don’t always leave it on and she’s been complaining. I woke up this morning to the computer on and Plex not running, but I just restarted the machine and it came up so this seems to be intermittent.
I’m looking at the Windows Logs right now and there is a warning which says “Plex Update Service Launcher cannot be restarted - Application SID does not match Conductor SID.” Which is listed several times over the last month. However I see a similar error for the Razer application for my mouse and its working and starts at login so I’m not sure how relevant that is.
Maybe you should weed out the apps which are all competing at startup. Ask yourself if you really need all of them be running all the time – even if you don’t use them all the time.
Maybe the situation improves afterwards.
Considering I haven’t added anything since it started being unreliable, I don’t see how that matters.
I have the same problem with Windows version of Plex Media Server 1.15.6.1079 and it has not been able to launch on login for months or years now. The app is clearly set to launch on start up both in the plex settings and in my Windows settings, yet it never does. If something is preventing Plex from launching upon login the way we have asked, then it should tell us what that is so we have a way to fix it - instead of silently failing.
