Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

I often wonder if Plex Employees know what Plex is. Maybe this will help:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200288286-what-is-plex/

I also wanted to chime in and note that this has been a problem at our house as well.

Watching a Live TV recording in progress, especially from the beginning, is not possible.

My wife is particularly affected by this and is pressuring me to consider plex alternatives.

Plex Server 1.16.2.1297 running on QNAP TS251+ firmware 4.3.6
HDHomeRun Quatro

Same problem here. With a thread this long, for such a long period I’m going to go with this isn’t something they’re interested in addressing at this point. Luckily I just did a one year plex pass. Commercial removal works sporadically with news records (sometimes it removes a segment), so it won’t be much of a loss to move to Emby.

It wouldn’t be a loss at all to go to Emby, I did because my Wife was going mad about the current situation with Plex TV Recording all the kids are now on Emby and MUCH prefer it…

Just throwing in my 2 cents that this has also been happening to me for as long as I can remember (only using Plex since January). Seems easily reproduced if you record a show for more than 10 minutes, then try playing it from the beginning. Seems to work if I tune to a channel before a show starts, then record and pause at the beginning. Scrubbing forward/backward works fine until I close the player and try to play it from the beginning again while recording.

@kvalory is the twitter handle for the Plex.tv CEO. Maybe sending him messages will get this fixed. I"m beyond frustrated at this point.

Also everyone here should peg Elan with at least one post in this and other threads. It wasn’t until the noise level raised sufficiently high in December when some movement happened. I’ll be honest, I don’t expect it again but still think people should try. I HATE paying for things that I don’t get…

Hi guys from the UK, just thought I’d drop in my two cents. I literally just got a HDHomeRun In the prime sale and a plex lifetime pass (a couple of weeks back). I was flicking through this post wondering if this is possible and seeing to my horror that people have a lot of problems. I couldn’t work out how to do it, then I realised if I find the programme that’s recording in the guide and click play, it then offers watch from the start and for me it worked perfectly. Admittedly I’ve only tried it a couple of times now but yeah it worked for me. Is this an issue for specific tuners? Fingers crossed it continues working for me as this is an important selling point for me and I’ll be disappointed if it breaks.

Did you try to FF/RW after you hit play? What is your server and client? I have a different problem depending:
Android client 1st FF works. 2nd FF video goes to end and freezes
Win PMP FF always starts video over
Roku TV last I tried it seems to work (i dont use it much)

try watching an hour long recording about 15-20 minutes after recording has started, then you will see the issues… I am in the UK too with a HDHomeRun Quad and have gone to Emby now to get away from these issues. Good Luck!

Well, it’s been over a year since I posted this and it’s still not fixed. I’ve moved on to Channels DVR for my live TV and recordings. It works flawlessly and has commercial skip, but it doesn’t actually “cut” the commercials, it just flags them which in my opinion is better because comskip isn’t always 100% accurate. Their comskip detection is pretty freaking good though. Now the bad part, it’s $8 a month. But, you can use it on as many devices as you want, and you can stream live TV away from the home as well as schedule recordings and watch them. They’ve also got a really nice, classic gridview guide that’s incredibly fast. I’ve never had a show fail to record. If you’re tired of dealing with PLEX’s excuse of a DVR/Live TV server, definitely check out Channels DVR. They offer a free month trial also.

@elan Are you watching this thread? Please jump in and let us know when you expect to get this fixed.

Plex using comskip just flags the commercials. If you use a client with a manual scrub bar you can scrub along and will see the commercials.

I’m poking at it internally to make sure it’s moving forwards.

Could we have a bit more information, for example has root cause been determined or are they still trying to figure out what is causing the issue? When can we expect to see a fix?

This is the main reason I have a plex pass, and for months it just hasn’t worked.

Yikes! $80 a year?

Seems steep, but, I guess we are getting what we pay for here.

I use Channels DVR in conjunction with Kodi and it’s worth the $80 per year in my book. It’s cheaper than the rental of one DVR box, and I’m able to use it on as many devices as I want. Also, the developers are pretty awesome and respond quickly to any issues. I was having issues with it when it was in its infancy, and the developer would message back and forth with me, sending out new betas to see if it fixed my issues. They’re very responsive. Give them a try if you’re tired of dealing with this issue. Better step your game up Plex before football season starts or you’re going to start losing customers to your competition.

Something I’ve been trying. Kodi with NextPVR. Free, can use OTA Guide data. Record from guide or on a time schedule. Watch in progress seems to work. Have the NextPVR running on Win10 with Hauppauge USB tuner. Kodi with the NextPVR client on Shield and the Win10 box.

Same issue. There are several threads about this. Live TV, time shifting, etc. used to work, albeit in a quirky manner. Now, it doesn’t work. At all. My media server is Windows 10 with Plex server on it. Clients are Windows 10 PMP, RokuTV, and Lg WebOS. All clients have exhibit the same issues with FF and RW going back to the same random spot earlier in the recording, etc. rather than doing what it’s supposed to do, so I have to believe it’s server-side.

As far as Emby, I did a whole Emby vs. Plex smackdown about 3 years ago. I actually liked Emby better in a lot of ways including the UI. But I just could not get it to work right, ever. Always some sort of weird issue. Totally infuriating. Plex had the drab UI but for the most part it “just worked” . So I went with Plex. Now that’s no longer the case. Maybe it’s time for another look at Emby. Albeit, the Plex Lifetime pass is already a sunk cost

Plex with RasPlex headless clients controlled by phone app is definitely still the best solution for server/client style music that I’ve tried. But the Live TV/timeshifting being completely broken is a real bummer.
