Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

Right now I have a Windows 10 machine (Intel i7-6700 CPU/Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070, 32GB of memory) . Emby has not been hogging resources so I will be trying Emby out on an Udoo Bolt SBC (CPU AMD Ryzen™ Embedded V1605B SoC up to 3.6 GHz) when my hardware arrives.

Where are things in the process? We like Plex but this bug could be a deal breaker

Emby client on the Nvidia Shield is great too. You can configure the home screen to see Emby related features much like the Plex does. Emby has a server that can run the Nvidia Shield too. I’m going to try that out on one of our Shields this weekend.

@elan This isn’t even a bug anymore. Its a core feature that has gone MIA since there has been zero customer-facing attempt to remediate the problem.

You know, when people say that Emby is so awesome, I’m glad for them, but also it is a real headscratcher for me. Because that’s not been my experience. At all. A few years ago, I preferred Emby to Plex, or at least its potential. So I really, really wanted to go with it. Love the UI. But it was just one headache after another. Eventually I had to go with Plex because it “just worked”. (Until now that is…)

So I tried Emby again. And this was my thought: “Same old bullshit”. Because I downloaded the Emby Server exe and initiated it. Installer got stuck on downloading the server. Repeatedly. So, I tried the Github version. Failed. Finally I tried the portable version. And was finally able to get Emby server going. Paid the $5 for one month of premier because I want to check out the DVR and live TV features. That bit went super smoothly. That’s right - the money taking part is seemingly the only thing Emby has perfected  But now it absolutely refuses to recognize my Hauppage tuner. The very same one Plex has been using for a year. Same ole Emby, I guess…

I did try Jellyfin too (Open source fork of Emby once Emby went propietary.) Looks very primitive, a lot of command line it looks like. Worthy project. Not ready for prime time. No thanks. Maybe one day.

So I don’t know. I really need live TV and DVR to be server/client as opposed to on a local PC - Because I created the media server in the first place to keep wires, noisy hard drives, unsightly antennae etc. out of sight and out of earshot from my actual viewing area, in which I’m going for the sleek, minimalist kind of thing. Even if I didn’t care about that, I also need the antenna upstairs for reception reasons.

Come on Plex, prove once and for all that you’re better than your main competitor! Maybe at least acknowledge the issue and let us know what’s going on? Elan, did that poking yield any results, or at least information? Can we maybe put a pin in VR and other gimmicky fringe B.S. for a minute, and just get DVR core functionality (the very feature many of us got Plex Pass for) right please?

Might as well get in on this as well. I purchased my lifetime plex pass way back in 8/31/2016 when they announced the DVR option. I don’t know how long it took them to actually implement that but I then posted the link below back in Aug 18 that time shifting wasn’t work. It’s really pretty sad that this is not fixed and wasn’t working from the very FIRST day that DVR was released.

Like others have said and I have said myself… PLEASE stop adding stuff people don’t really want and fix the core issues of your product (Thanks for fixing the nvidia shield cover art).

I love Plex and use it every day… BUT only for music because none of the other stuff really works 100%

After 285 posts… probably at least 100+ people posting here… pretty sure any ONE of us can get you logs and anything you need to QUICKLY fix this issue… I even have an extra Nvidia shield that is doing nothing that could be tested on… as well as my other two live units.

I posted about this back in Aug 18: First football game - Kind of a failure

And here we are with football about to begin once more…

I think Plex is great but seams like the bug has been going on way to long. Channels does an amazing job with the DVR feature but Plex can’t seam to get it figured out yet? I just don’t understand. I wish they would at least post something about this issue and at least say it will be addressed at some point soon. There was an update to Plex just yesterday and still the DVR bug goes on.

I am not losing yet the hope that it will be fixed soon. But, it would be nice to have any update from Plex.

I tend to use pretty much Fire devices (sticks new and old gen and 4k box) for pretty much all of our TV consumption and this issue has persisted at least the past few months if not closer to six months. Don’t recall an issue during this past NFL season (Go Pack Go!). Anyway I do have one Roku TV and tried watching ABC News while recording the past two nights and it started from the beginning without a problem letting me skip through commercials and all. I haven’t had any luck on my Fire devices, not even once. Can’t say it’s conclusive but so far it seems to be working correctly on Roku for us.

edit: Tried from my Android Pixel 3XL phone and same behavior as my Fire devices. Makes sense since they all android based

Rest assured it does not work on ROKU devices. I can’t answer to what you saw but I have all ROKU devices and it hasn’t worked reliably in a year or more. Try it again and try multiple attempts to time shift forward and back. That said, works like a dream with EMBY!

Interesting. I did just upgrade my server this past weekend too and did a fresh install of Plex on it. I’ll give it a try again tonight if I’m home while recording. Can’t say I tried to skip backwards but have successfully skipped through commercials while still recording (and starting from beginning) two nights in a row.

I have that behaviour when the show is less 10min started sometimes. But, it is more I doesn’t start

I am done with Plex. One response from Plex support and it wasn’t encouraging. I’m off to try Channels DVR as one user suggested. The price is steep but if it works correctly, I will be happy.

Channels does look interesting. I am enjoying Emby for Live TV and DVR. Looking into trying m3u IPTV this weekend.

Channels DVR looks like a great alternative from the outside but unfortunately no Australian DVR support as yet :frowning:

I’ve been following this post for a while but yet to comment in anticipation that PLEX may actually release an update that works. The inability to watch a live recording is so painful. I’ve tried the method of adding the grab folder and also rolling back versions but i find it is hit and miss. When that does work it is annoying that when it reaches the current live playback time that the video seems to just stop and more often then not Plex on NVIDIA shield loses its ■■■■ and crashes.

I’ve tried Emby and whilst it works once it reaches the current live spot on a recording it seems to just stop also forcing me to exit the recording and then go to the live stream.

Whilst old and not as slick as Plex, Emby, Channels DVR etc - Microsoft had this DVR recording and timeshifting capability down pat with Windows 7 media center. I’ve used it since the early days and it seems to be the only consistently reliable DVR out there, however it relies on a PC or an older XBOX for connectivity and these days has a lot of codec support issues for non TV content.

Come on Plex, sort this out please!!

@elan Still nothing? An integral operation of a signature feature of Plex is broken for a year and no fix? I’m dumbfounded.

Yep this issue has never been fixed.

I do think there is a player issue at root since our nVidia Shield appears to be able to play from the beginning but our Roku based TV’s does not.

Quite annoying when you are trying to start watching a baseball game currently in progress.

I use Channels DVR/MCEBuddy to record and then process/import that stuff to the Plexiverse and it works very well for that. Channels DVR will play a live stream, but it’s very Seat Of The Pants Flying, no frills, behind coach, no restroom. I’m not sure how that differs from Plex (other than it actually working when called upon).

Emby works, for the most part, but Emby is, IMO, not quite ready for Prime Time. I am a subscriber - as long as they keep up their excellent customer relations and it is for that reason I believe one day they’ll have something pretty darn good. Just not today.

Windows Media Center is what everyone should aspire to be - 'cause it just worked - but unfortunately Developers are overwhelmed with the feeling WMC just has to be improved upon and so far Developers have only been able to kick that elusive orb around the playing field every time they try to pick it up…

BTW:
I have an HDHomeRun. Silicon Dust’s version of the DVR software should be an embarrassment to them, Users are embarrassed for them, but so far SD is in denial.

Time will tell if anybody learns anything from all of this, but so far… nothing…

Any news please? There are obviously quite a few frustrated customers here. When can we expect a fix?
