I havent visited this topic for awhile but here is my update. I saw a new server (Win10) update so installed and tested.
My primary client, the one I really need to work is Android TV. I have a Shield and a Sony TV. I see no change there. Still does the same as always. Starts at a random spot, 1st FF shoots to end, next FF video locks up.
Secondary client is PMP. Not sure what went on in this forum with PMP discussion, but I’m just posting this a a client type like any other as related to DVR funcion.
PMP seems much better! It used to always start over from beginning with every FF click. I didnt test too long but it does seem to work well. This is great news. I can use the PMP until the Android TV fix is available. Looking forward to that day!
I installed latest server and Android TV client updates and things looks good! I tested on my Shield and Sony TV. Both seem to work fine. Didnt do an extensive test but from what I can see, everything works.
This is awesome news as NFL regular season will start soon and this is key functionality. I am happy to again be a happy Plex customer
I actually played around with this last night and it did seem to work as it should. I always got play from beginning and play at live options on my shield when recording a 30 min show (for testing). Due to the only thing I watch is basically football, I am still (probably) going to stick with the HDhomerun app. This is due to how fast the 30 second and 10 min skips are. I still think Plex is lagging a little bit when I skip forward and even for that split second delay, its a little annoying.
However, I want to thank Plex for finally narrowing this down and getting some fixes in which I am sure will please a TON of people. Thanks again!
I grabbed the server logs and the Plex app logs (latest Windows version of the new Plex app). Let me know if this is the stuff I should be attaching or if I’m missing any log(s). This was a morning news show that I started recording at 9:04am and tried to “play from the beginning” around 9:43am. It starts from the beginning fine, but as I press +30sec in the Windows Plex app, it goes forward every other time, then back to a 9:04am frame the other times. It’s consistently every other timeshift that this happens. I used this show because it shows a clock in the corner and I can see the actual time compared to the timeline depiction of where I’m at in the recording.
Mixed results with the new server (1.16.5.1554). A quick check with the windows client 3.104.2 looks like live tv is working. I can watch from start, FF, REW, skip to a point on the timeline.
However, with the Android TV and plain Android (7.20.0.11992) client it is like nothing changed. Watch live puts up one frame and stops, never getting to live action or responding to FF or REW (stop works). Watch from start displays video, but it is live action and FF and REW have unpredictable results.
Update: sideloaded the 7.21 Beta on my Fire stick and that worked now.
I can’t speak to the TV release, but on 7.21 mobile the “Watch from start” is now fully working for me. Watch Live still has the video freeze problem - the developers know about this.
Last night I too watched part of a NFL preseason game as it was recording and for the time I watched it worked great. I have a Win 10 PMS and watched with an Nvidia Shield, both on the beta versions. I’m hopeful this is truly getting ironed out, time will tell. One thing I’d really like to see is when you start watching a currently recording program and decide to stop at some point, Plex remembers where you stopped watching so you can continue from that spot whether while it’s still recording or after the recording has finished.
I want to thank you for getting this fixed before football season too. Using the new released server version and Roku, i was able to use Watch from the Beginning successfully.
This worked as expected using Roku. Could play from the beginning and skip ahead, etc. Tested on an NFL game last night. I tried from my Pixel 3 and it has the option to start from the beginning but doesn’t appear to work. Starts at the live point of the show. Skipping backwards seems broken as well.
I’m running my server on a Synology 218+. NVidia Shield client. HDHomerun connect quatro Ethernet all around, Plex Pass (duh, DVR). Everything is 100% up to date, settings are whatever Plex decided out of the box.
I CAN watch a show that is currently recording, and am sort-of able to pause and/or FF-RW. But it’s a crapshoot where in the recording I’ll actually end up. Frequently have to just stop, then start again several times to get where I want to be. I missed roughly 1/3 of yesterdays preseason Seahawks game. Sad face.
It’s pretty frustrating. I get that Plex is trying to have a ton of features across many, many different hardware environments, and that must be difficult. But I just last year stopped using Windows Media Center (not by choice, I’ve used it from the very, very beginning). So I’m used to something that (sorry Apple) “Just works”.
I posted in July about the inability of plex dvr to handle watching a recording in progress
tried the new plex server update and tested it. No improvement. It still chokes if you try to timeshift a recording in process. basic transport (ff/rew) is still awkward. I have an Intel based QNAP server and roku and shield clients
I’ve been using the channels dvr for a month and it works flawlessly. great for live sports. it a bit more expensive but it works. plus about half the system resources needed on the server side.
I am sure that I am not alone in this - live TV / dvr is the only reason to have a plex pass. I am not going to continue my plex pass into september
