Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

It’s too late. Football season has started. The only worry-free solution that I have been able to find is ‘Channels DVR’. It costs more than Plex or Emby, but it always works. Never fails. Super smooth. I want to use Plex but I cannot watch programs while they are recording.

I have Plex server running on Synology DS218+. Just updated the server to the most recent version as of yesterday. Using the Plex iOS app on my iPad, I was able to successfully use the ‘watch from start’ from a show that was recording, and fast forward in time and watch the show. I then tried the same thing using the Plex app on my fireTV, and I was not able to ‘watch from start’ (video was frozen) or fast forward/rewind.

This has been my experience too… Channels DVR is definitely working well. Plex has this issue and Emby was pixelating on me for some reason… Channels DVR has worked flawlessly for a couple weeks now.

After updating my server to v1.16.5.1554 running on a Pi2B, i postponed a trial of Channels Plus while waiting for Plex Devs to resolve this long standing fundamental weakness.
This afternoon, the FireTV client v7.20.0.11992 offered to play an ongoing recording of BBC Wuld News America from start or from live. Playing from start began to play from live. The << button on the remote rewound and played from start, but playback stopped when the ongoing recording ended. Is this the normal behavior?

Restarting the recording was an unattractive option because the client’s FF behavior is very crude. I hope this, too is in the development plan, and that if a server/FireTV client pair is released that is intended to work well in these areas there is some notice about that on this forum.

How do you get 7.21 on NVIDIA SHIELD? From what I gather, it sounds like the Android TV beta releases are basically for every other Android TV device except the SHIELD.

From what I understand, the Plex Client is included in Plex Media Server on the SHIELD so you have to join the Plex Media Server beta in Google Play, but the bundled client in the beta still seems to be 7.20

Unfortunately, it sounds like the beta release process for PMS on Google Play is manual and is often delayed compared to other beta releases, so maybe that’s why it’s not available yet?

I must be on the beta program for both as I just received an update to the client like today = Plex for Android 7.21.0.12194-beta

Look around to see how you sign up for that beta… Here is the Fourm that shows the releases for the beta: Beta Release for Android

From what I can see, all you need to do is go to the google play store using that link in the beta link I posted and then click install on your device.

Welp I watched the football game last night. I set the recording and started it about 45 mins later - and it actually worked perfectly! I was able to start from the beginning, and then FF and RW at will. After awhile I started deliberately trying to get it to glitch out by rapidly clicking FF then RW, etc., and it kept working. This is a Windows 10 server playing to PMP on a separate windows HTPC. Perfect OTA TV experience.

I also tried the LG Web OS app on the TV, and in limited testing that too seemed to work perfectly, albeit it lacks the grid view and it was hard to find what I wanted (please please add that, then I wouldn’t need to use the HTPC for OTA TV), but the actual playing and timeshifting seemed to work great.

Yay Plex! I hope this is working for everyone, I’d be interesting to hear about other user’s experience.

Again I see people commenting about PMP. PLEASE, PMP is not part of this discussion.

I can say again, absolutely NOTHING is fixed with the latest on a W10 server (beta) and a ROKU (Preview) nor an ATV4K. Start position, rewind, forward, … are all pseudo random landings.

Repeat, NOTHING is fixed and there is no change from the original problems other than I get more “start from beginning” and most of those are because of bad guide data.

I wasn’t able to get a very consistent experience on a roku tv, fire stick, or fire 4k box. It worked here and there but all of a sudden I jumped to essentially live TV and missed the Packers touchdown. At halftime I went down to my 4K box and it wouldn’t even play live while recording. Would just freeze immediately. So I cancelled the recording and then watched it live hitting pause here and there which worked. It’s behaving different than it was a few weeks ago so I see things changing but something isn’t right yet.

I also am having issues time-shifting/playing from beginning. I’m on a windows 10 for plex server and a roku 4k client. Seems like this has gotten worse as I previous only noticed this type of this happening on recordings that had been going on for greater than an hour (ie. trying to pick up a 2 hr show after the 1 hr mark), but now it seems like it’s all DVR recordings regardless of duration.
Help is appreciated. Thanks.

Why is PMP not part of this discussion? PMP is a client that can use Live TV/DVR, no different than Android TV, ATV, Roku, FTV. If the discussion is related to how PMP client works in respect to the Live TV DVR topic, I dont understand what the issue is.

It is useful to see which clients are working and which are still having issues.

Because it’s not the client we’re discussing and even the mods have said so.

With all due respect, I am curious why. PMP is not a concern for me, but why are PMP Live TV DVR clients excluded from this discussion? What makes it different than any other client and off topic? Is this not an officially supported function? (I dont know) I saw there was some hubub about it awhile back when I wasnt following this thread so dont know what happened with all that.

When I go to to this topic, it is General Plex Features - Live TV DVR It is not categorized under any client type. Maybe others are looking at same thread under a specific client category??

Also, I was under the impression PMP was going to be history soon, correct? Replaced by a client with no remote control support, don’t know how we are referring to that here.

BTW, on a positive note, watched last night’s NFL game timeshifted 1 hr with NV Shield and Win10 PMS. Worked perfect. I hope other clients get fixed up soon. I can understand peoples frustration. Been too long with this issue

This might be easier and better for PLEX if they’d just admit they have no intention on ever making LiveTV/DVR a viable product. There is absolutely no excuse for such problems to linger more than a year and months after the CTO chimes in to tell us how committed he is to fixing things…

As of right now time shifting and starting for a known location is still a random set of events.

Disastrous day for me on the NFL/timeshifting front. I wasn’t even recording, simply pausing to pee then after that I could never FF to catch up during commercials. It was all over the place.

Win10 PMS
Roku Ultra Client Running current non-beta PLeX.

Having some of the same issues I’m seeing posted already.

Server: Win10 PMS (latest)

Clients:
iOS (iPhone X): FF and REW land somewhat randomly throughout the live stream, though it seems to have a few specific times it keeps recycling, they just don’t happen to be anywhere near where I was currently watching.

FireTV 4K: watch live just freeze frames on the current live frame. Watch from beginning actually goes to live tv. Timeshifting is unpredictable as above.

That was around discussing PMP specific things that are not related to this issue. If PMP is also experiencing this issue or confirmed to be working by others, it’s more than welcome to be mentioned.

It most certainly was not. It was about PMP, period. The language here is quite clear and posts deleted were similar to those above, possibly from the same people. @ChuckPa even made another post he removed that read something like “WHY are we discussing PMP” reference PMP and LiveTV posts.

Start a different thread for PMP else it will become even more confusing.

That said, I can’t believe you’ve got no update concerning the lack of progress.
