I could not disagree with this statement more. If Plex DVR basic functionality worked, it would be a good value compared to most other DVRs. Like you pointed out, the basic functionality does not work and has not worked…which makes it a VERY poor value.
What I meant was Plex has so many other features besides recording OTA TV. IMHO Channels DVR is the best. It just plain works and it works well but it is also the most expensive. It does one thing where as Plex is a full blown media server.
That’s true, but Plex Live TV/DVR is so buggy that its boarders on deceptive and dishonest imo to even list ot as a capability on any build that isn’t beta. Live TV and DVR won’t work at all on the last two windows Plex for example. That’s their latest and greatest windows client.
I totally agree and in a home where you have a wife or other family members they don’t want to jerk around with a buggy, hit or miss dvr. Heaven help me if for some reason “The Voice” doesn’t record :>)
We are keeping Plex as our main media server and using Emby for Live TV and DVR. Emby has been working well for us. I tried the month to month and decided to go all in because an Emby Lifetime is worth it to not have the frustration in my household.
Good move on taking out the lifetime pass on Emby, they are a very attentive and helpful lot that deserve your money! I switched to Emby for live tv about 6 months ago and ended up moving everything over to Emby and cancelled my Plex sub due to this unbelievable live tv situation. I also did this to have a happy household that can watch & record reliably. I just thought I would have a look to see if this was all fixed at last but it further confirms I made the right move to Emby. Good luck to everyone hanging in there!
This has been frustrating to deal with. I know you guys are working on it, but please focus your efforts on two things, both are which are done while the show is being recorded.
1 - Time Shifting — figure out the buffer issue as it’s impossible to ffwd when you have it constantly buffer.
1a - crashing while ffwd or just watching
1b - let us pick the skip ahead and back time
2 - if you are watching a show you are recording and quit plex. When you go back to that show give me the option to resume where I last was.
Thanks.
Downloaded the new server even though the announcements made no mention of any of the issues listed herein.
Fired up Plex Preview on my ROKU Ultra and no LiveTV menu item
Click on MORE, selected server and still nothing.
Rebooted the Ultra and then found LiveTV unpinned, Had to pin it, exit PLEX Preview (PP), restart PP and then reorder to get it back to the top of the home screen.
Only had 1 recording in progress. Received no “start from beginning” option but upon viewing I could see the progress bar indicated it went back to the beginning. However, time shifting to any previous point did not work.
I’ll try again later this evening but initial indications are that no progress on these issues is observable using the ROKU Ultra as a client with the recent server release.

It is good to see that I’m not the only one with Shield TV and Win10 PMS working perfectly!
I am so glad that I didn’t go with the market saturation metrics and buy one of those other devices.
So a post from more than 2 months ago means what to recent progress for the majority of users???
Got back to testing as promised.
I knew NCIS was marked as "NEW: for tonight. Unfortunately the bug where tuning to a channel fails with high regularity appears to be back in this version of the server and of course it failed repeatedly when I tried to watch NCIS. The only remedy from previous occurrences of this bug is to wait 15-20 minutes to try to tune again and/or reboot the server.
Fortunately we’ve got EMBY, YTTV and a good ole TV Tuner as more reliable choices for this station and show.
All I meant by that was that back in September is right around the same time that it started working for me as well as the other person on this thread.
Before September it was not working on my setup. I was having the same issues as everyone else on this thread. I do not have those problems anymore, so that is progress. It may not be progress for everyone with the market saturated ROKU and ATV4K devices, but it is progress none the less.
I also have 2 LG TVs with Plex for LG app and it is working on that platform as well, Before that it was not working, so again, for me, progress! I am so sorry that there has been no progress made for you and your devices.
I have not checked our FireTV 4K devices in a while, because we really don’t use them for Plex, but I will give them a try this Sunday during some of the football games and let you know how they are doing on that platform.
The Plex App on our ROKU TV does not work yet, so still no progress there. Frankly, I don’t waste my time with ROKU because I really dislike that interface.
I do get how frustrating it is when things don’t work the way they should. I was there a few months ago. I really do hope that Plex gets this issue resolved for your platforms soon!
You do understand that the ROKU interface, per PLEX statements in these threads, is the intended unified interface??? So again, no progress is being made.
Hey, saw your post notification. I havent been on this forum for quite awhile since they fixed the problem on Android TV. NFL season is in week 10 and I have been using it without a hitch, couple games every week. Most of the time i use the Shield just because its a little snappier, but it also works fine on my Sony TV.
I also have a TCL Roku TV which my wife uses more than I do. I record all her shows with commercial removal and that works fine. I tried the watch from start on it a couple times and yeah, still broken.
For me, i gave Plex until start of NFL season to fix the problem. If not I had a couple of alternate solutions tested and ready to go and would have moved on.
Shield and Mibox AndroidTV devices have offered to start an in progress recording for me about <=10% of the times I’ve tried. Those few times it worked, time shifting was no issue. My PMS DVR is on a WD PR4100. If this always works for you the PMS issues appear platform dependent.
Yes, no progress has been made on Roku so far. I believe that no progress has been made on ATV4K either.
However, progress WAS made on Shield TV (Android TV) devices and Plex on LG and according to another poster, Plex on Sony. So, I believe that Plex is working on the problem.
Have you tried using Plex for Windows or the old Plex Media Player app?
Have you tried using the hosted Plex Web app (plex.tv/web ) from the browser on any computer, tablet, or phone ?
Have you posted logs from your Roku and Plex Media Server? https://support.plex.tv/articles/201377603-roku-logs/
We have 2 NVidia Sheild TV boxes in our house. We love the NVidia Shield TV devices so much that I just went out and purchased the 2019 Shield TV Pro model as an upgrade one of the boxes. Time shifting is still working on the new model as well.
@Smokindog let me know if you are interested in buying my 2017 gaming model. It is in excellent condition. I have all the original packaging and accessories (remote & gaming controller).
My toilet is still working after 18 years. It still flushes and the water spins the same direction.
We have 7 toilets like it in the house and we’ll be purchasing a new one soon for the master bath.
@adutchman - let me know if you’d like to buy my old toilet!
Discovered another way that this all fails. We had an internet interruption the other night, my wife went to bed and select an OTA show via PLEX. About 20 minutes later I tuned into the same show in another room. It gave me the option to begin back at the point my wife started to view the program. Time shifting and everything else failed as it has been. Still 100% broke. ROKU Stick+ and ROKU Ultra used in this scenario. All software/firmware latest for all components, PLEX Preview as the client.
My suggestion is that you keep your eyes on the almost 3 month old posts for your progress. I get it, 3 months ago you and one other person said your setup was working. I’m extremely please for you both.
I’ll keep an eye on the present and the lack of progress for the majority of users. I’ve posted more than enough logs in the past and since nothing has changed in the interim I see no reason to provide anything further. You’ve made that comment in the past. Again, I’d suggest you keep an eye on your world, bless your heart!
PS - I don’t rely on PLEX because it’s not reliable. I’ve got other options I use. I do however help out with some friends who are stuck because they believed in what PLEX advertised and spent their budget to make it their environment. They simply can’t afford to switch at the moment.
On a nVidia Shield server and client playing from the beginning of a recording in progress has worked well for me for a few months…however, selecting start from live from a recording in progress and rewinding does not…and then you can’t even exit and start from the beginning.
I’m glad the start from the beginning works, but bottom line, the issues with DVR, of which this is one of many, and the (lack of) progress is not acceptable for a business which takes your money for year long or lifetime memberships and will not provide full refunds. Theres no other way to spin it.
